In light of Scotus decision, I'd like to propose new DU group...
...Pro-Choice.

I think the Choice forum is alright, but in some cases it's bullshit. I've gone there too many times wanting to discuss a challenge based on Pro-choice ethics, and was shouted down by trolls and forced birthers. :eyes:

I want a forum like this one, where I know I can discuss issues related to being PRO-CHOICE without hearing all the baloney from the forced birthers and anti-choice folks. I'm guessing that sometimes the opposing view is allowed in Choice, because it's a "discussion forum" as opposed to an actual group with a mission statement, etc. (so it's harder to kick out the trolls and dissenting opinions).

In light of the SCOTUS decision, I believe we need a place where we can discuss these things--safely and without interruption from disruptors, or the clueless. Where we can post action alerts, discuss issues related to pro-choice advocacy, share ideas, stories, etc.

If you would be interested in such a group, please state your interest here.

I'll be cross-posting this in women's rights and choice in an attempt to gauge interest.

Thanks!

bliss :)

1. Count me in
I am shocked by the number of forced birthers on progressive discussion board like this. It's like, what part of women are people don't you get? I rarely go over to the Choice forum either because I'm not interested in anyone's esoteric bullshit about "when life begins". Save it for your philosophy professor. Or arguing about whether or not abortion scars women emotionally. Fucking GD is thick enough with that shit.

The only caveat I foresee is that whereas we can keep the sexist asshole trolls out of this group, we may have to deal with them in that one. A lot of the p0rn and prostitution enthusiasts like to tout their pro-choice bona fides and good discussions about reproductive freedom might devolve as they whine about their pet issue.

2. We would have to create a great mission statement.....
Edited on Thu Apr-19-07 06:46 PM by bliss_eternal
...one that made it clear what sort of discussions the group is interested in having. Anything beyond that would be unwelcome and could thus be deleted per a mod. ;)

I recall when a "disruptor" entered this forum, with discussions of "swinging" and defending a man that held his wife in the home they shared against her will. Were it not for our mission statement to refer back to, we couldn't have shut that person down nor eventually have them banned from our board. Stating specifics in our mission statement is essential to protecting us as a group.

Pro-choicers need a safe place to talk on DU, in my opinion. The Choice board isn't a safe place. I don't want to spend my time defending my beliefs. I want to talk to like-minded individuals about the issues. I want to be able to discuss actions we can take to help women. Not feel baited or have to debate assholes. Like you said, if I want to do that I can go to GD. lol.

Thank you for expressing interest. You'll be an asset to our pro-choice forum! If you have DU friends that you know don't like the present Choice board, give them a head's up about this. We have to get several people before I can take it to Skinner. :hi:

3. We don't get much interest in this forum
I just am not sure we need another forum when I worry that we can barely maintain this one.

4. Only need a couple of more people with donor stars...
...and I can take it to Skinner! Don't be shy... If you want a safe place to discuss issues of pro-choice, please express your interest here or on one of the other forums, where I've provided threads.

Thanks!

Participation in such a group may be low, but if it's gets any worse I'm prepared to go fucking underground. I am not a baby incubator, point is moot for me now, but if one of my daughters--or anybodies daughter died or even comes close because of this decision (not an unpossibility considered the maternity death rate in the US)It's on. It's fucking on.

14. I can't tell you...
...how glad I am to see your name as part of this. Thank you!

Oh, and I'm SO there if we need to take this underground, which given the current climate is a definite possibility.
If Harriet Tubman did it with no technology whatsoever, why can't we?

I hate the Choice forum. We definitely need one for those of us who are for freedom.

13. Thanks, BlueIris...!
You're a welcome addition!:hi:

It just occured to me the other day, that maybe more don't post in the present Choice forum because of the "anti-choice" contingent.
Sometimes people just want to post, share, vent and may not feel like debating, fighting or defending their views.

I'm very thankful we have feminism--but I don't want to take over this board with "pro-choice talk."
I also understand that not every person that posts in feminism is as hard core as some of us. :P LOL!

I'm not going to lie, I'm die hard, hard core, staunch pro-choice and proud of it! :D
Wow, I think I need a shirt.

15. We need a mission statement...
I'll be back later today(I hope), if not definitely tomorrow to start a thread for that. If anyone has any thoughts on
what our mission statement should consist of, please share it here. Also feel free to pm me, too.

Have a peek at the mission statement for our feminism forum for ideas and a sense of what it needs to be.

We need a statement that includes pro-choice ethics, while at the same time making it clear that we are not open for discussions or debates in regard to defining when life begins.

I don't know if there is any way we can do this (or include it in our statement), but I really don't want to see any language like "pro-life", "partial birth", etc. I'm not comfortable using the terms that they do, and feel that they don't serve our greater goals. NOW, NARAL, Planned Parenthood and Ms magazine all refer to those on the other side of the aisle as "anti-choice."

Anyway, didn't mean to go off on a tangent, just some thoughts to get everyone thinking.

Talk with you all soon!
