Glass Slippers? Old Hat
March 10, 2007
Guest Columnist
By JUDITH WARNER

We were laid out on the couch the other weekend, stopped in our tracks by an unforeseen afternoon broadcast of “Maid in Manhattan,” when an important moment of sociological revelation arose.

Ralph Fiennes’s character, the Senate candidate Christopher Marshall, and Jennifer Lopez’s Marisa Ventura, a hotel maid mistaken by Marshall for a socialite, locked eyes for a searing moment. “I only came to tell you that this, you and me, can’t go anywhere beyond this evening,” J. Lo said.

“Well then,” purred the man best known for his impersonation of a sadistic Nazi, “you should’ve worn a different dress.”

“Why’d he say that?” asked my daughter Emilie, who is nearly 7.

“He said that,” I answered, “because he is arrogant. He’s a man who’s used to getting his way. He figures that he knows better than she does why she’s wearing that dress.” . . .

1. the movie
"PG - Parental guidance suggested
Some material may not be suitable for children. "

Well, it's not a G rated movie. That line of script is delivered in a context that a child her age isn't emotionally prepared or old enough to understand.

I'm sure there is an off button or channel changer on your television, no?

2. uh - did you even
bother to read the rest of the article?

I'm trying to start a discussion on *that* - not the movie.

3. So the concern is
that we're going to have a huge wealth and intelligence gap based on breeding with people of your same work world achievements? So accomplished people are smart, and all non accomplished are not smart?

4. I remember discussing
"social capital" in my sociology class. Something you get from living/working/going-to-school with people of certain strata.

Knowing "which fork to use". The clothes, language, style - that's 'in'. Knowing others of the same 'social class', etc...

Obviously being "smart" has little to do with it (George Bush being one example of someone cashing in on their social capital with few smarts to back it up. . . :( )

What's that old saying my momma used to say, "Birds of a feather flock together . . . "

Anyways - I'm not sure what to make of the article/trend - I'm still mulling it over. I need feedback to help me in the process.

5. That was my problem with it was the association of wealth with intelligence
Edited on Tue Mar-13-07 09:23 PM by lizerdbits
Bush being prime example of dumb and rich. A friend of mine is an example of poor and smart- struggling to support 2 kids after husband went to jail with no resources to take even online classes, or time due to working about 60 hours a week and no money for baby sitters. She'd like to and I think would be successful at continuing education but due to her financial predicament isn't able to do so right now. Someone "kindly" told her they were surprised she lived in a trailer because she was smart. :puke: The trailer park was later bulldozed to build some $400,000 town homes so she now has a 1+ hour commute from another county due to lack of affordable housing and 5 years on a waiting list for some.
So I was looking for the same thing- other people's input to really decide what I think about it. My primary thought was the ridiculousness of associating intelligence and wealth. Lots of smart people are in fields that don't pay much but they do what they love. Was it really common for rich men to marry "lower class" women or did they marry daughters of rich couples? I have a feeling it's just a fairy tale, though I'm sure it's happened in reality a time or two. Is it an attempt to stifle women's ambitions and self reliance? "Don't waste your time in school, wait for a man to 'rescue' you. Just take plenty of time to look pretty." If it doesn't happen I guess you're not thin enough or have big enough boobs, etc.
