The baby in the dumpster thread...
It's a thread in GD if you haven't seen it, and it's really pushing my buttons. According to some:

The MOTHER should be hunted down and thrown in jail for life (or worse)

She should have either been able to get an abortion or find a clean, safe place to have the baby, and then take the baby to a fire station or hospital, no matter what her circumstances, mental or physical state.

NO mention of the father, of course. Because SHE gave birth, SHE is the villian, not him. Where was the father when she was giving birth near a dumpster?

A few of the posters have brought up some good points, but overall, it's a typical misogynistic thread. Not saying what she did was right, and thank goodness the baby was found within 1-2 hours of her birth. But still, there are underlying issues that no one wants to address. It's more convenient just to heap scorn on the woman.

1. Yeah, I know what you're saying.
Situations like that make you so angry and people just tend to direct the anger towards the "closest" peson, which is of course the mother of the newborn becuase who else was there to help her? Nobody. Gaaa. The situation is sickening. Not the mother, but the situation that in this supposedly modern and rich country that would seem like the best choice to anyone. But you know what? Considering that pretty soon it will be entirely possible that we won't even be able to get birth control, it's going to start looking like the best choice to a lot more people. And who's fault is that?

But, people can go on blaming these desperate young women. Yeah, sure. It's easier that way.

2. That thread and many of its contributors made me so angry
that my brain shut down. A lot. It's still not entirely back up yet.

3. Some threads, that one in particular, cause me to skip responding
you read some of the responses and wonder..."what made you that way?"

4. Such a lack of empathy, isn't there?
It's a tragic situation all around, and some people lack the ability to see beyond the end of their own noses.

5. I remember these old Grand Master Flash lyrics
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 08:05 PM by ismnotwasm
"it was cold and dark and raining hell when you put your baby in the garbage pail, you kissed the kid put down the lid and tried to forget what you just did" Can't remember the name of that song, but that line always gave me chills. Grand Master Flash was an early hip/hop band that usually spoke to political and social issues. They understood the kind of pressure that would cause an action like that. What's fucked up, (and not exactly related) is it seems like every other month there is some male asshole going to jail while "babysitting" a women's child, who can't handle the crying and shakes or beats the baby, causing death or brain damage. And that's just up here in Washington. If I starting a thread every time that happened, I bet it would sink like a stone.
