Harriet Tubman
I rarely watch The Daily Show because every time I did so, I would witness a horrid comment made about womens' bodies. But the other night I was still awake at 11:00 pm and I noticed that Lifetime had replaced 'Will and Grace' with that disgusting 'How I Met Your Mother' which I have an absolute negative physical reaction to. So I thought to myself, "I'll turn on that 'comedy' show and just see how long it takes me to turn it off."

It was less than 5 minutes. The sketch was about how all the Washington politicians have been bought off by rich corporations and their lobbyists. So the Daily Show's 'journalist' (a Black dude) is at one of the fancy parties in DC given by these corporations. He is standing there with a martini. He is telling jon that he sees this Senator and that Representative and important business leaders. He's all giddy about being at this exciting and lavish party. He stops and takes a drink from his martini and says, 'This martini is as dry as Harriet Tubman's vagina.'

jon laughs hysterically and finally says, 'That isn't the reference we discussed earlier, but I like it.'

All I gotta say is, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, I hope little jon and his buddy find their way to a place comparable to Darfur and they find themselves with vaginae....or some other Karmatic event.

I did email Comedy Central and complained....like that will do anything.

And I bet I'll get responses here that say, 'Gee, you feminists have no sense of humor.' I'm so sick of that.

Go read at Wikipedia all about the life of Harriet Tubman.

I'm in a nightmare and I can't wake up. I hope someday Mother Nature shakes some sense into these misogynist beings.

I tried to find the name of the person who heads up Comedy Central and their address, but I couldn't. I would like to put my words on a tangible piece of paper and mail my disgust to this grand leader of ha-ha TV. So if anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Now I think I'll go buy a grill of some sorts so I can have hot food when the grid goes down...just in case Mother Nature does decide to rock n' roll.

1. I can't watch a lot of TV
I mean, I can watch movies, and a few shows, but I haven't watched what passes for comedy in years. I know I've missed some good ones, but I don't have the patience to sort them out. I've never seen the Daily show and don't plan to start. Especially after reading shit like that.

That comment is over the top bizarre and I don't in anyway 'get' the joke. A lot of the time I can, I mean I might not think something's funny, but I see where somebody might.

Is it supposed to be funny in some cynical way? Or are the writers simply getting desperate? Harriet Tubman's vagina? Really?

Fucking freaks.

I snooped around the website and wiki but didn't see anything in particular. Time/Warner stuff looks like. I'll snoop some more

2. I just watch Old Comedy Shows....
Edited on Fri Oct-29-10 12:16 PM by femrap
like 'Will and Grace,' and 'Roseanne.' I can't even watch 'Raymond' anymore since that tall brother of his was on The Roast of Joan Rivers (I went to see Joan's Documentary a couple of months ago) and he said the most horrid thing about her. So I just can't look at him anymore. (If Joan has anymore face lifts, she'll be blowing snot out of her clit.) And she just took it and smiled...but after the Roast, she discussed how cruel they had been to her. It was a great movie.

I watch NO current comedies....too lame, no wit....way too sexist. I mainly read, but sometimes I just want to veg out and watch a TV show to escape a bit. Game Show Network was my friend....old games from 1977 like 'Matchgame' were fun to watch and an escape. But I don't get the station anymore.

OK, discussing TV, I'll admit I watched the Finals of 'Project Runway' last night. And I was shocked that the woman, Gretchen, won. I was very happy for her. She is a strong and confident woman....and she got shit for it. She is a hippy-type from Oregon. Well...I'm so glad she won.

I'm no way into fashion myself....sweats and sneaker for me, but I look at fashion like I do paintings...it's artistic and I enjoy color and design.

I think Viacom owns Comedy Central...so maybe I'll just write to Sumner Redstone if I can find his address. I think he's still CEO or Chair of the Board...or he might be dead by now.

edited for typo.

4. Oh, yes
I don't get on the 'I don't watch this or that' bandwagon, really. It's just that I find most comedy shows to be painfully unfunny. Sexist humor is old and tired, the material is recycled shit. I never got into watching any of the talent shows or the reality shows mostly because the weaning out process seemed so mean-spirited.

I don't do fashion as it is either, but I like comfortable things, and I love dresses that flow and don't restrict movement more than I like pants. And you know what? I like what I like. That GOD I work in a profession I can wear scrubs to work. I'd just die if I had to dress up, especially in those horrid shoes I see everywhere. I don't see how women manage to get through the day in some of what is considered 'professionable' clothing. Yuk.

3. I did some research and found
the name of the person who oversees Comedy Central. Surprise it's a woman.

Judy McGrath, Chair'man' and CEO of MTV Networks since 7/04. Viacom is HQed at 1515 Broadway NYC.

And the mission statement is thus:

"Our brands engage, empower, and connect across every platform."

I guess Viacom likes to empower boyz and connect their misogyny across every platform.

5. I have noticed that when celebrity gets famous for being
so liberal they start to get a lot of permission to "get away with" saying things that are sexist and homophobic.

People don't care if that celebrity says offensive things because, as a "well known liberal" that celebrity is somehow inoculated against charges of being sexist or homophobic.

Jon Stewart seems to be an example of this. He gets away with having offensive references on his show because he is liberal, and more now, and more blatant now than in the past. He's Jon Stewart though, and he has a huge reputation and a huge following because he's a super-smart, and super-liberal. So apparently it's all okay. :(

6. and gee, why would anyone be bothered...?
Edited on Sat Oct-30-10 10:21 PM by bliss_eternal
...that a black man, made a disparaging, sexist comment about a dead black freedom fighting female? i mean he's black so it's cool, right?

:eyes: :puke: :sarcasm:

i swear that is so beyond fucked up, i don't even know how to process it (nor do i want to).

it makes me sick, how ethnic minorities are used in hollywood, to perpetuate stereotypes. some don't have the fuckin' sense to take a stand and say, "ummmm, no..." because they want so desperately to make it... depressing and disgusting.

8. Good point
HOW is that Ok? A modern day Rochester to his Jack Benny.

I'm not a fan of Stewart and never have been, he seems like one of those golden boys who can speak, but not really feel. Creepily sly and very manipulative. Quite frankly, with a nod to Thomcat's post, I would expect a 'liberal' show to nix that comment, even one who has embraced wholesale and unapologetic sexism. It's not funny, it's unnecessary, and it's weird.

...the Jack Benny/Rochester reference, is spot on. thank you for that!

damn shame really, that the alleged "progressive media dudes" are frequently so lacking, when it comes to women. maher, stewart...have said, or featured hideous "jokes" around women, on their shows. disgusting. and people wonder why there are frequent negative comments about them, from women on du. :eyes: wake the fuck up, guys.

11. I believe your analysis is correct...
and besides, he made fun of a dead Black woman...so what's the harm? I don't like this world in which I seem to be stuck. I certainly won't be having anymore 'tests' with 'The Daily Show.'

But I must say I was very glad to see that his little 'extravaganza' in Washington, DC turned out to be pathetic and embarrassing. He was declaring that we must be 'nice' with the repugnants????

I ask you....who is the insane one? lol!

I heard nothing about what Colbert said...I need to google that. I enjoy his humor...he doesn't seem to have to demean someone to make a joke. But I seem to be asleep before 11:30.

12. At least he made a fool of himself
in DC by suggesting that we need to be 'nice' to the repugnants. He calls that 'sanity?'

13. Is *that* what his rally was all about...?
ummmmm......ick. :puke:

I'm civil to all, but I don't see myself cozying up to any right wingers, just because 'Jon Stewart said so.' How very dudely of him. :eyes:

Why should I when I know perfectly well, most would be all too happy to send people like me back to the days where we could only be employed working in rich women's kitchens. No thanks.

14. Here is a critique I found about
his return to 'sanity.'

http://progressive.org/wx103110.html

I think he hurt the GOTV for Democrats. I really do. What pablum he gave the Youth....which I believe stayed home. I always look at Athens County in my home state. It, believe it or not, usually votes like San Fran, CA. The average turnout for OH was around 49%. Athens County, where Ohio University is located, was only 33%!!!!

I don't know if that's national...but it killed the Dems in Ohio. We went from entirely Blue to ENTIRELY BACK TO RED in just 4 short years.

Maybe I'll have to move...these repugnants will have people dying in the streets. The stupid people of Ohio voted for Kasich who worked for Lehman Bros. after 8 years as a Congressman. They voted for a Wall Street Thief for governor...who lost $450 million in pension funds for them. I'm surrounded by Willfully Ignorant people.

The Ohio voters deserve what they get. Dumbf*cks.

10. Holy shit. I quit watching The Daily Show in late '04,
Edited on Sun Oct-31-10 04:15 PM by BlueIris
for many reasons, mainly because it just wasn't funny anymore, and I don't remember seeing anything on there I considered antifeminist. Now the "jokes" depend on misogynist comments...referencing Harriet Tubman? What happened to those writers? Jesus.
