There are a couple of threads regarding child support in GD and the Lounge.
Seems that some men think that if women are able to exercise reproductive choice, they should be able to exercise financial support choice. Silly, misguided little dears, bless their hearts.

While I gave up on participating in those threads a long time ago, I am still greatly amused to see some men just weepin' and wailin' at the injustice of it all! Probably the ONE thing in the world that they cannot control, and it's just killing them!

1. What amuses me is how many seem to think men have zero birth control options
I understand that not everyone can participate in a clinical trial to test the men's pill. I understand that vasectomy is a drastic measure. But if you were certain that you never wanted to be a father, why not exercise some control and make sure of that yourself, rather than foisting all bc responsibility to your partner?

(I have yet to get a reply to that in one of those threads, by the way...)

2. I personally know 2 men who got vasectomies for that reason
They knew they didn't want kids. I say kudos to them for their self-awareness and for taking ownership of their personal preference.

The funny thing is that both got the procedures done when they were in their 20s. Neither had a problem finding a doctor willing to do and neither said anyone gave them a hard time about it. Contrast that to the women who have told me that doctors flat out refused to do tubals on them for reasons varying from them being "too young" to "But you've only had one child!" to my personal fave "What if your HUSBAND wants more children?" :grr:

3. I too have a friend who was refused tubal ligation
because she was in her early 20's. I myself couldn't get an IUD from my OB/GYN after my first child because "We usually wait until you're done having kids." Hello! It's not medically contraindicated! (This was only about 5 years ago). Luckily, the doctor at Planned Parenthood thought I was adult enough to make up my own mind about the BC I wanted to use.

4. You'll change your mind
That's my personal favorite. I didn't even bother to try to get my tubes tied, I knew no one would do it for a childless woman. How could I ever be happy with no children? :eyes: Funny, after my sister had kids I suddenly became even happier that I don't have any- closer knowledge of what it's really like (without actually experiencing it).

5. Actually, they are starting to do them for childless women over 35
My doctor friend says the insurance companies have figured out that it's cheaper in the long run than years of b/c or an unplanned pregnancy. But you still can't get one if you're in your 'nubile' years. Cuz, you know, your husband....
