Sunday Dinner st Grandma Eulas' 1949
Edited on Thu May-12-05 03:30 PM by JitterbugPerfume
I

saw my grandmother

Grab a chicken by the head

Sling it around

Until it was dead

(we had helped to chase it down

as we giggled and screamed and clowned)

then

Its headless body

Bloody and aimless

Shivvered and flopped

All over the yard

And then it was plopped

gutted and headless

when it was its deadest

Into a pot

Of hot

water

de-feathered

and cut

into small pieces

and floured salt and peppered

in proportoions that pleases

and fried in lard

rendered from the hog

that laid

(once upon a time)

in

that same back yard

1. Yucky Jitterbug
At our house we use a hatchet neatly remove the chicken's head throw the body under an old galvanized warsh tub to keep it from running over the cliff into Lake Erie. (Breath)

Boy the feathers do stink in that hot water too.

Chicken today feathers tomorrow there on the cliff over looking Lake Erie.

2. I havea galvanized warsh tub
in my backyard out by the shed I been aiming to plant flowers in it

no cliffs in central Indiana for a headless chicken to flop over

I could not imagine doing what my grandmother did

but it was just "part of it" for her

3. Great imagery, Jitterbug
The poem reminds me of some famous poet whose name I can't remember right now. Excellent work.

from NYC...I was a city kid thrown into a farm setting...shoot...I thought pork chops came from the freezer at the A&P...
