Atomic Kitten had a nasty exchange with someone saying they were from the Clinton campaign.

At first it seemed confusing because the caller said they were from Iowa and the numbers were from a San Fran area code and included the number for Hillary's CA HQ(still with me ;-)). AK also said the caller was obviously on a cell phone.

I have no doubts that Atomic Kitten got this call or that the caller made a stupid statement regarding Obama being a muslim.

AK also did some sleuthing and found the local area was as a service for phone banking done by the Clinton campaign.

So I was poking around the Clinton site and they have a special online tool that allows you to phone bank with your cell phone from anywhere in the country using a targeted call list you are provided with minimal charge to yourself.

So I am sorry an overzealous Clinton supporter decided to be stupid but this does not appear to be the campaign itself.

I work at home and screen my calls for the most part, and I've been getting calls obviously from a cell phone but with a (415) area code, the area code of SF where I live. *69 doesn't work on the number [phone].

I picked up the phone today and was advised they were the Clinton campaign calling from Iowa. I let her go on a bit and then told her I was supporting Barack Obama.

She said and I quote: "I do hope you consider that Obama's Muslim upbringing will be a problem in the general election."

My obscenity-laden response let her know in no uncertain terms that they were lying about Barack Obama and that the Clintons are irrevocably damaging the Democratic Party.

I am consumed by my utter contempt for the Clinton campaign.

The phone company just confirmed that they offer local area codes for this type of phone-banking and that this number is, in fact, the Clinton campaign ...

Besides the fact that AtomicKitten is a longtime poster at DU and is not a liar or a troll.
Besides the fact that the phone number she got (and took a photo of) matches a Clinton HQ #.
Besides the fact that I am, yes, an Obama supporter.

Most "smear calls" from the opposition or the other party tend to be ugly and abrassive in their tone. This one wasn't. "I do hope you'll consider the fact..." instead of "BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS A DIRTY DIRTY TERRORIST!! VOTE CLINTON!!" which WOULD have been a reverse psychology moment from the GOP or Obama's HQ. The fact is, a lot of other people who AREN'T AtomicKitten might have taken this information absolutely to heart--not every Obama supporter is as gung-ho or knowledgable as the ones here. It COULD have worked in Hillary's favor.

This argument is one that, let's face it, we HAVE seen this kind of talk here on DU. No one refers to "Obama's muslim heritage," which was probably a fumble on the part of the caller, but some Hillary supporters DO say things like "Once the GOP gets a hold of Obama's middle name, his father's roots, his time in Indonesia--they will bury him. I know he's not a Muslim, but these are FACTS. THIS is how the GOP works."

Which is why I'm so ready to believe this (admittedly pretty oblivious) caller was simply following a script set out by Clinton's campaign--"Make Sure They Realize He's Unelectable in a GE For These Reasons..."

I posted yesterday saying I was totally against using GOP tactics on Democratic opponents to "test their mettle." If you're opposed to swiftboating, you should oppose it no matter who it comes from, even from people whose rationale is "If they can't handle ME, how can they handle a Republican?" It's just plain wrong, and this Phone Call represents the height of dirty politics.

But I won't hold Clinton personally responsible. I just think her campaign is currently being mismanaged--she may be winning now, but she may have her OWN GE to brave through, and that'll be equally ugly.
