This appears not to have made it across the demilitarized zone from LBN to GD-P, or maybe I'm just blind...

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton did something Wednesday night that she almost never does. She apologized. And once she started, she didn't seem able to stop.

The New York senator, who is in a tight race with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, struck several sorry notes at an evening forum sponsored by the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a group of more than 200 black community newspapers across the country.

Her biggest apology came in response to a question about comments by her husband, Bill Clinton, after the South Carolina primary, which Obama won handily. Bill Clinton said Jesse Jackson also won South Carolina when he ran for president in 1984 and 1988, a comment many viewed as belittling Obama's success.

"I want to put that in context. You know I am sorry if anyone was offended. It was certainly not meant in any way to be offensive," Hillary Clinton said. "We can be proud of both Jesse Jackson and Senator Obama."

1. Even the goddamn AP can't help but add a bit snarkiness to this straightforward story.

'WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton did something Wednesday night that she almost never does. She apologized. And once she started, she didn't seem able to stop.'

Something good by her - offering an apology - becomes something ridiculous, because she's now she '(does)n't seem able to stop.'

Sometimes you just feel like strangling some people.

It's important to note that Clinton has stated that she "repudiates" Ferraro's comments. That's important. This is more than Barack Obama did in response to Donnie McClurkin's homophobic statements while McClurkin was emceeing an Obama event.

It's impossible for candidates to entirely control what everybody in their campaigns say. In this electronic world, it's easy to "catch" folks saying disgraceful things and then attribute those comments to the candidate they support. Let's not fall into that trap. Ferraro's comments were undeniably racist and unacceptable. She's resigned from Hillary's campaign and Hillary has publicly repudiate the statements. Let's move on.
