I found this link here: http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/search_fulltext_advanced.html

I typed in the name of my great grand uncle who was a well known figure during his time (1900) and he popped right up.

It states he had 2 daughters (lie - he had one daughter and one son at the time) and it says his middle initial was "P." which was not the case. Lots of nice fancy engravings and crap on his tombstone too from WOW as well. They had good reason to lie I suppose but I won't elaborate as to why.

Anyway, you might care to check it out. It has massive archives that can be viewed in .pdf format and saved to print from various newspapers.

Best of luck searchers! :D

My family has been in the midwest for 175 years.

If your family is spread around, you might want to try OldenTimes.com - http://theoldentimes.com - Historic Newspapers Online for Genealogical & Historical Research plus 18th- through Early 20th-century Newspapers from the U. S., England, Scotland, Ireland & Australia!

They collect excerpts from old papers refering to people and events with the eye of a genealogist. Even if you can't find anything on your family, you might find some wonderful historical articles to give it all context.

The old patent medicine advertisements always suck me in.
