3. The damn thing keeps going back and forth across the state...
so far, it's mostly flooded roads. Another ones in the Atlantic heading this way.

I have to say that I've lived with these hurricanes for 50 years, and they are stranger than ever. Fay got stronger over land. Unheard of...

Tropical storms, fuelled by warm ocean waters, generally lose power swiftly once they hit land.

Fay, however, surprised meteorologists by actually gaining strength as it marched northeast across the peninsular, passing over the flat, swampy Everglades.

"In fact, it is stronger than it has ever been so far," hurricane forecasters noted in their advisory after the storm's sustained winds increased to peak at 65 miles per hour.
