When is a penny just a penny?
We purchased an item online. I mention it because we printed the confirmation thus the final amount was not hand written or printed on a thermal paper when a 0 and 8 and a 6 often look the same.

The credit card statement, however, was for a penny more.

Big deal, right?

But I wonder whether the merchant cross checks
invoices and what is being submitted to the credit company. Is it possible for an unscrupulous employee to just add a penny here and a penny there and pocket the difference?

I remember a movie in the early 80s with a plot where an employee siphoned the fractions of the cents of the Social Security and Medicare taxes.... this was before everything was computerized, of course.

1. ok - this is just a bit off-topic . . . but the movie
Office Space had a similar plot - and was hilarious - particularly if you have ever spent time in an office cubicle.
