Cold sores (herpes simplex 2)
Anyone have this nasty little bug running amok in their system? I just got my 2nd case in 2 weeks and I have 4 little blisters going across my top lip.

What do you use to treat them? I'm 7 mo pregnant so I cant use my Acylovir so I've been putting Neosporins new lip treatment and it doesnt seem to be working.

Abreva doesnt do a damn thing for me... and Carmex makes my lips feel funny.

I've had this virus since I was a child and I'm HOPING that my kids dont get this - got teased so many times as a kid.

Also, do yours get worse during stress, heat, hormonal changes, etc?

1. denavir
is a prety good drug, a cream you put on when the tingles start. if you catch them early, you can keep them down to a small eruption. neosporin won't do anything.

3. Denavir.. gotta ask dr about that
I havent had an outbreak in quite some time.. now my lip today looks like I got socked. I'm thinking its just a combination of my hormones and stress getting to the best of me right now. I'm sure after I deliver I'll be fine again with maybe 1x a year outbreak.

The neosporin lip treatment also made my lips soft and nice again but it didnt do a thing to my cold sores. I HATE THIS VIRUS.

Mine usually erupt at night when I'm sleeping and I wake up feeling a huge tingle and I already got the bump by the time I get to the bathroom.

5. valtrex
i took valtrex daily for a while, and it was great- no outbreaks at all. but i didn't really want to take a powerful and expensive drug daily. my doctor recommended taking the valtrex at the first tingle, then again in 12 hours, period. IT WORKED! actually, i did take a third dose at 24 hours, but i had a sore that was one tiny little blister, no itching, almost not there. yee-ha
you probably don't want to do this pregnant. but at least it is a small exposure.

2. ICE....turns it right OFF., like a switch. can be caused by sunlight once
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 12:03 AM by sam sarrha
you get it..

BUT....ICE, wrap a chip of ice in paper towel or cloth towel.. about the size of your thumb.. gently press the ice directly onto the sore for about 30 seconds to about one minute ,no longer,or as long as you can take it till you get used to it, you wont get frost bite with a small piece of ice. then wait a minute and do it again ..maybe 3 times.. if you should bump it or it starts to tingle again.. repeat the ice again..quickly.. use it maybe maybe every hour or 2 if you can at first.

if you can get the ice on it before it forms a blister.. it wont form a blister.. at least for me..

I have had genital herpes for 35 years and it worked every time.. tho i haven't had an outbreak in 12 years...

you will figure out what your icing duration is for your case..and how many times you have to repeat it pr outbreak..

>>>>>>>>>>CAUTION >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> this virus can be tracked to other mucus membranes !!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TOUCH YOUR LIP THEN TOUCH YOUR EYES...DO NOT TOUCH YOUR EYES..you can go very blind. AND DO NOT..DO NOT TOUCH YOUR GENITALS... WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY WHILE YOU HAVE AN OUTBREAK. EVEN IF YOU HAVEN'T TOUCHED YOUR LIP. BE CAREFUL. if you put on ointment use a latex glove..actually you can just cut off the fingers and use one at a time or "Q-Tip" .Neosporin will help it heal faster and prevent cracking and crusting.. there is some great stuff i saw at a healthfood store but i forgot what is was. thay all have it.. good luck.. and congratulations..

i hope you didn't freak you out too much... but BE Careful. I know people who have got herpes from oral sex..

it can be activated by sunlight, a bumping of the lib or nervous nibbling or biting the lip.. check out dirk pearsons 'Life Extension' great health book.. you can get it used at www.Amazon.com for a couple of dollars used. its a BIG book. didrk talks about using BHT to prevent it... and he discusses it.

hope i didnt dump too much on you..

4. My g-mother always told me to put ice on it since I was small,
even tho I still got blisters, probably not as bad, but they still came up.

I couldnt imagine life with genital herpes. Sores on my lips are bad enough - and Id never wish these on anyone. Are you doing anything other than ice to prevent an outbreak?

I've always been very anal when it comes to washing my hands and having cold sores. I seen pictures of eye herpes and that was enough to scare me since I was small. I generally use a q tip to put my medication on and it does work well.

When is the sore not 'contagious' anymore? Is it after the blister pops and nothing comes out? Mine is a scab now no more gunk in it as far as I can tell.

Nope.. you didnt scare me at all, I make the best I can out of having this and to keep it from going anywhere but my lip area. I almost had my 2yr old daughter exposed to it today - she grabbed my water bottle behind my back and almost drank from it. I didnt think I could run that fast being 7 mo preg :)

OOPS.. I just realized I have simplex 1 not 2.. I do not have genital herpes :)

I appreciate all the info you gave!! Very informative :)

6. Rite Aid carries Herpacin lip balm about $6.00 and it helps
If you start right away, it like pulls the liquid to a head quickly and when it breaks, the liquid is gone immediately. It may still take a while to completely heal but that painful swelling is gone in a day or two.
