I feel "silly" posting this but
I just got back from the vet's office. One of my "old ladies" has had a bump on her leg for a few months, but since she never acted differently or as if she was in pain, I didn't think much of it. I took her in today because I'm going out of town & just wanted to be sure she was fine in spite of the bump.

Well, it might be cancer. I won't know for sure until at least Friday, the day I leave. The vet says she can wait until I come back to schedule the surgery or whatever she's going to need because if it's gone on this long, 2 weeks won't make much difference.

If you could please send up some good vibes for my "baby." I've had her for 13 years & it seems like she's been part of my life forever. :(

thanks
dg

1. Hey DG
Years ago, I noticed a lump on the back of one of my fur babies. I took him to the vet pronto and found out that he had tumors throughout his body including one that had wrapped around his sweet little heart. But up until I found that lump, he seemed his old, sweet, mellow self. Well, that was about 17 years ago. Vet medicine has made huge advances since then. So many things that used to be a death sentence for an animal can be treated successfully nowdays. I'll be thinking very positive thoughts for your baby!

for your baby. And lots of things it could be. Best to wait until test results come in. Besides there are lots of things that can be done even if it is cancer, I know because my ferret is undergoing chemo right now for cancer. And so far doing better. Its just a pill once a month and his belly fur my take forever to grow back (from surgery) but he is walking and actually playing some now. I found out when one morning he couldn't move his back legs at all. Rushed him to the vet. Also took almost a month before they decided on the lomustin treatment. So sending lots of good vibes your way.

The vet told me not to worry, but I was born under the sign of the "Worry Wort," so that's going to be a tall order for me.

6. Oh, dg, I feel for you!
When my Binky had a growth 2 years ago, I was a nervous wreck. The vet told me that lumps, bumps, growths, and tumors are fairly common for dogs, but not as common in cats. She went through surgery, and the day the vet called to tell me "Binky is cancer-free" I cried like a baby.

Thoughts and prayers go out to you - and don't ever feel silly for asking us to think about the ones you love.

8. Thanks Rev :)
The vet was good about giving me the ups & downs...that when cats get cancer, it's always bad. But, Lizzie's right here at the computer now, acting all normal...I'm hoping it's not a "show" for Mom...she was beating up the "kitten" earlier when he nosed too close for her comfort zone--which is the entire house....(he's now 2 so it's not like she's pounding on a baby kitten, plus he probably deserved it....)

9. And cats hate other cats who smell like the vet.
It's inevitable - after the vet visits, it takes them at least a day to settle down and stop hissing at each other.

Sounds like you've got a great vet. to you and your furry beasties. You're in my prayers.

they have an on-going feud. :) He starts it, Lizzie finishes it by delivering the front paw "smack down."

10. Not a silly post at all....
...and cancer isn't the death sentence it used to be, but I share your heartache and worry. My little old lady (14 yo doxie) has a bump on her head I've been watching for 2 years! There's so many benign lumps and bumps these old guys get, so I think the odds are in your favor.

...sending positive vibes to you

11. Not having a pet, I hadn't thought about this, but it would seem that...

. . . pet medical insurance would be a really good idea because of all the stuff they can treat nowadays that they couldn't do anything about, back when I had pets.

12. It is available, in some areas.
My sis-in-law had pet insurance on her (then) 2 cats and 2 dogs. But there was an age-limit on premiums, too. (she lives in Harrisburg, PA)

13. Do you mean they won't accept pets over a certain age - or they drop them?

. . . And what about pre-existing conditions?

From the ads I've seen, it looks fairly affordable.

14. I think it varies with each company
Lynn said she got coverage for the four of them for about $20/month, but once they reached a certain age, the premiums were raised significantly. I guess that could really be helpful if you had young pets, but not so good for the older ones.
