Countdown Newletter: 0815/06 -- Terror & Politics
I'll miss you all tonight. I'm off to dinner with friends. Maybe I'll catch you all on the rerun side!

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------
President Bush met with his counter-terrorism team today, nearly a week after Britain broke up an alleged plot to blow up U-S-bound aircraft. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/14358233/

Sen. Hillary Clinton is being twinned with terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden in a new TV attack ad that claims she is "playing politics" with national security. GOP candidate and former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer is unleashing the provocative ad - it includes juxtaposed slides showing Clinton and Bin Laden in similar poses - to boost his long-shot effort aimed at stopping the former First Lady from winning a second term in the Senate. The ad bashes Clinton for opposing the Bush administration-authorized wiretapping by the National Security Agency, calling that controversial program "vital" in derailing plots aimed at downing passenger flights from the United Kingdom to this nation. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/443606p-373533c.html

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

Republican Sen. George Allen came under fire Monday for allegedly making demeaning comments about a campaign volunteer for Democratic challenger James Webb based on race. http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-00762sy0aug15,0,6856650.story

Latest on the terror plot from NBC's Lisa Myers.

The government's new order that all airline passengers put their shoes through X-ray machines won't help screeners find a liquid or gel that can be used as a bomb. The machines are unable to detect explosives, according to a Homeland Security report on aviation screening recently obtained by The Associated Press. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14353942/

The soldier who triggered the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal by sending incriminating photos to military investigators says he feared deadly retaliation by other GIs and was shocked when Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld mentioned his name at a Senate hearing. Within days, Joe Darby was spirited out of Iraq at his own request. But his family was besieged by news media, and close relatives called him a traitor. Ultimately he was forced to move away from his hometown in western Maryland. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-abu-ghraib-whistleblower,1,6136660.story?coll=sns-ap-nation-headlines
Joe Darby is our guest tonight.

In the largest electronics-related recall involving the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Dell Inc. agreed to replace 4.1 million notebook computer batteries made by Sony Corp. because they can burst into flames. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14350403/

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- Single male (red hair, long arms, interests include hanging in trees and grooming) seeks female for long-distance relationship and possibility of meeting up in future to help save species. Zookeepers in the Netherlands are planning to hook up Dutch and Indonesian orangutans over the Internet and believe the link could at some stage be used as an online dating service where apes could get to know one another and keepers could work out whether they would be compatible mates. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/O/ONLINE_ORANGUTANS?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME

1. I heard an interview with Joe Darby today on NPR
Fresh Air (not to be confused with Bay Airs). It sounded fascinating, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about what he's gone through. Sounds like he and Joe Wilson might have a lot in common.
