The cold wind blew in off Gull Bay as Crispini felt her head pound from the night before ....
what had she done? Her arm throbbed and she looked over to find a new tatoo.

18. Oh dear.
Hang in there, Crispi. Right now there are things I can't be sure of either, and the reasons are similar.

I've said this to people before and I'll say it to you now: Nothing in this world is more valuable than your own belief in your ability to land on your feet, no matter what happens.

Life today is such that none of us can count on things staying the same in our employment. I no longer see my career path as one smooth trip over a bridge across the river from the shore marked College to the one marked Retirement. I don't even see it as a series of stepping stones across the river, with me jumping from one to the other until I reach the other shore. Now, I see it as...there's no bridge, there are no stepping stones, and the river is rampaging...but a bunch of logs are floating down the river, and my job is to jump on one as it comes by and keep rolling it for as long as I can (or care to) until another one comes along that I can jump to, and another, and another, until I get to the other side.

That doesn't mean my moves aren't strategic. What it does mean, though, is that I try not to expect to stay in one situation forever, that I'm always looking out at what's going on and what may come next, and evaluating the situation just in case I'm about to get thrown off the log. What other logs are coming down? Which ones are close enough for me to make the leap to? How much closer will they get me to where I want to go?

You can't control what's happening, but you can still control what happens to you. And the key to that is, as Keith is so fond of saying, "keeping your knees loose." And when it comes to jobs...he should know!

Take care and keep checking in with us!

19. well said
there are days when I've thought of chucking my profession completely, although at the rate things are being outsourced, it might chuck me. And yet we're still supposed to sell our kids on the idea that education is important.

21. Eh, Miss Big Brain,
they won't outsource you anytime soon, I don't think. ;)

You might understand this: I think a lot of the current drama I'm involved in is due to the different corporate cultures especially as it relates to the different parts of the country. For example, East coast, uptight and professional, West coast, laid back but overworked, and Texas, we just wanna get the job done, and are completely unimpressed with "flair." At least that's my perception of the three markets and the people that come from 'em. :silly: Thoughts?

24. no, in this economy, they'll simply stop doing the sort of work I do
and when that happens, I might as well go somewhere else. Like Starbucks.

On the other matter, if by "flair" you mean "bullshit", oh yeah, baby.

At least from what I saw in DC, there seems to be more effort spent by East coast types on jockeying for position -- trying to appear professional without necessarily being professional. Everything is about how it's gonna look on the resume and who's moving up or not and why. Lots of frenetic movement, but it's not always purposeful movement. West coast types remind me more of academics -- perpetually overworked, perpetually behind, but they're sort of resigned to that instead of having a psycho freak-out at irregular intervals. The Texas types tend to bother the West coasters a little because they'd like to finish the job before the Sun burns out and they bother the East coast types by sitting in meetings nodding at the puffery and then uttering one or two cogent remarks that pop their balloon.

outsourcing.

22. The company I work for
has been bought, sold, gone bankrupt, came out of bankruptcy, gone back to being independent, acquired other companies, merged and was re-acquired by at least other companies after that.

Stay low, smile a lot, and just say: "Sure! I'll get that for you."

Good luck. This too shall pass.

that while you're smiling and saying, "Sure! I'll get that for you." you're secretly driving the company into bankruptcy, bailing it out, merging it, etc., etc. ;-)

I just sit back and watch. As long as they don't fire me, or decrease my salary, let 'em play businessmen. Not to say I'm not muttering under my breath while saying other things, however. :)
