8. It's projection
just another symptom of his psychosis. There's also the false statement that just because the Dems went along with it, it should be okay with us irresponsible anti-war people. If the facts were fake, and they agreed with the facts as presented, that doesn't change the fact that the facts were FAKE! A logical fallacy. Moran!

Or the Knothole Gang?

Responsibilities may cause me to cut out early without notice. But I am here for now. This is a recording.

I am against your fake war, CCB. I am not rewriting history. You made this up because you wanted it so badly, you were gonna get it no matter what.

Hey, Shrub, the election is OVER! Leave Kerry alone!

110. Yeah, our parents would have KILLED us.
I'm sure there are many solid disciplinarians among parents these days, but I see enough evidence of the opposite problem: parents literally entreating their kids to obey, or letting the kids run wild, or expecting store and restaurant staff to be baby-sitters or -- worst of all -- treating anything, including the theater or a local business or a house of worship, as an extension of the family's personal property. Don't think that latter example is rare. I see it constantly.

65. i'm calling bs too pats
we were under strict orders to "behave or DIE." when i worked in restaurants, we dreaded negligent parents. one waitress almost dumped two pots of coffee on a kid who wandered back into the kitchen! recently, i started adding "please find someone to care for your children during our appointment as we do not have child-care facilities at our office" because too many parents would bring their demon kids to the office, let them run wild, scream, fight, tear up the lobby, wander into the staff kitchen & eat our goodies, etc. :grr: kids will be kids, but restaurants (& offices) are not playgrounds.

and I thought "I sure hope these bratty moms don't whisper behind his back that the only reason this guy doesn't like their ill-behaved kids is because he's 'anti-breeder.'"

Gay or straight, NOBODY should have to put up with other people's ill-behaved kids. And I give Keith 100% props for saying it too. He and I are both sure to be chastisted for that--as single childless people. But--and I know I will sound utterly stupid and innocent when saying this but I will say it anyway--I swear to God, if I ever DO have kids, I will teach them to behave in public or I will take them away from the public eye if they don't.

The woman they had on here did NOTHING to make a cogent argument that anyone was hurting kids by asking them to behave. And her argument that people didn't take their kids out as much in days gone by held absolutely NO water at all.

You go cafe owner, and wish more would do the same. Having been in places where parents let their kids run wild I give him credit. Having made up to 8 kids behave in a restaurant about once a month it isn't that hard. The parents that complain would be like the friend of mine that let her kids run wild. One time he turned around and dumped a plate of ketchup covered fries over a man's head in the booth behind them. She thought it was funny and laughed. I took my kid and left.

154. A further thought...
Some parents seem to think that because families eat out more the world should be more tolerant. I think that because more families eat out it is doubly imperative that children are well behaved. Just because they've become used to the brattiness is no reason the rest of the world has to put up or shut up.

Bad English drives me nuts. Part of my job is proofreading, so I'm a stickler. I work with a bunch of communicators and some of them can't write a grammatically correct sentence half the time. It seems to be mostly the younger people who don't know all the rules of punctuation and grammar.

165. It never ceases to amaze me how many of Keith's fans work with words.
I write, I edit, AND I proofread. PEOPLE WHO CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO GET THEIR GRAMMAR RIGHT DRIVE ME NUTS! An especial pain are writers who think they can treat editors like "janitors" of prose...they don't even feel the need to examine their own work and at least TRY to have enough pride in it to make it look halfway good before handing it off.

And no, many of the younger kids don't know the rules. Even worse, they think they don't have to, because "so long as everyone gets what you mean it's all right." Well, sometimes they DON'T "get what you mean" because you didn't communicate it well. That's what they don't understand.

100. Hey, I thought 'irregardless' was a word.
Who knew.

My mother-in-law uses it all the time and my hubby and I always laugh about it. Drives me nuts!

111. I still haven't bought a copy of 'Eats Shoots and Leaves', but my English
teacher friend insists I need it, she says I'm comma challenged.

116. There was a comma error in a review of Truss's latest.
I was reading the NY Times review of the latest book by the author of Eats, Shoots, and Leaves, and there was a punctuation error in a sentence quoted from the current book. That kind of thing makes me insane, because I do lots of editing on my jobs.

I'm a Diana Hacker person myself.

122. I never heard of Eats, Shoots, and Leaves
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 09:46 PM by SharonRB
Is it some kind of book about grammar?

I do a lot of editing, too. Mostly for the mechanics of English kinds of things, but some copy tweaking as well. I'm a graphic designer and that's part of my job.

130. Yes, but there is no comma after "Shoots" in the title.
That's the point of the book.

A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

"Wh?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

Yes, I have the book. I couldn't resist the title.. or the story.

132. Now that I see this, the point is that there shouldn't be
a comma after eats, not that there isn't a comma after shoots.

Looks like one I'll have to get. I read the excerpt from the chapter "The Seventh Sense." That's me, alright. I go crazy when I see misspellings on menus, signs, etc.

171. Sharon, you go above and beyond the call of duty.
In my years of experience, I've found that the vast majority of graphic designers are best kept away from the copy. If they read it, that's a blessing. But I sure as heck don't expect them to catch typos or tweak copy! Nor do I expect them to be great typists! I always check over everything I ask them to key in. (And I don't mean this in an insulting way--I'm not a great typist either! None of us was hired for our typing skills!)

Surprised you never heard of "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" though. It IS a British author at work, so her advice goes only so far from an American usage standpoint, but it's still pretty good. My personal favorite book on that subject is "Lapsing into a Comma." I grabbed that one at half price while bumming around Ithaca one day. Not only great grammatical advice but an entertaining read.

Or the reason why. It's just "the reason is..." or "It's because..."

144. I hate "efforting"
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 10:10 PM by Patsy Stone
As in the news media's claims they are "efforting" to get us that story. Not a word. Not, not, not a word. Also, while we're at it: impact, used as a verb, pisses me off. "It impacted the decision." It's a noun, meaning, among other definitions, "to have an effect". It's not a verb. Impact, used as a verb, means to pack together or strike with force. Stop it! Just stop it. :)

145. Hooray! Someone else hates "impacting"
I tell people that the only thing impacted is a molar... and that's an adjective. :)

Don't get me started. That report on grammar was spot-on.

See my note to Pats below. I am forever correcting the use of "impact" and its variations. People just don't realize it's not a verb.

160. I love you, Pats
I've never heard anyone use "efforting," but one of the most common things I correct when I edit at work is "impact" being used as a verb. Drives me up a wall. You have no idea how commonly it is used.

172. Actually, I read somewhere that "impact" has been used as a verb since
1913.

Get that...since 1913.

I STILL hate it like poison, though. I still hate making nouns into verbs where there are perfectly good verbs being used. WHY do people have to say "authored" when they could say "wrote"?

And I don't like using "myriad" as a noun rather than an adjective...although I am told *that* is OK, too.

Oh well. I have to choose my pet peeves. But I still think of one thing when I think of "impacting" something, and that's teeth. Painful.
