They're doing the Keith sketch on SNL!
Affleck made his opening remarks in a Keith suit, complete with stripey tie!

And the opening with McCain & Tina Fey was

13. Already did some of them.
Just have to hit a button on my alarm clock to change it. Gotta make sure I get up by 8 tomorrow. Our local AAR station has a conservative jerk on Sunday mornings and Nancy is going to be debating him tomorrow morning. Should be fun to listen to.

14. I didn't think it was that funny.
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 11:08 PM by BerryBush
As I said in GD, he talked way too fast, was incomprehensible half the time, and didn't really poke fun at the "real" Keith. Yeah, he did get pissed once because his apartment building got sold out from under him, but it's hard to picture him getting in a fight over a cat. And even with his ego, he really doesn't think so much of himself that he curries praise from other people or brag on himself the way Affleck parodized him doing.

The only parts that struck my funny bone were the reference to "Eric Blair" (he's constantly making reference to George Orwell as Eric Blair) and the way he kept demanding everyone's resignation. Now THAT was the real Keith.

If the argument with his coop board had been over them not letting him put up a satellite dish on his balcony so he could pick up all the MLB games, and he'd gotten into a huge lather over their insult to the great American pastime of baseball...THAT would have had me on the floor.

I know you'll all say I just don't like to see Keith made fun of. Wrong...I love it...but you've gotta do it in a way that's more like the real him, or it's not funny. Yeah, the camera angles were funny, but it was too exaggerated and over the top. All they had to do was do it the way Colbert would've done it, that would have been a riot. Instead they had him spinning like a top into various positions, which was overkill.

Subtlety...that's what was missing. It was like they had to hit you over the head with "Keith is always exaggerating how terrible Bush and the Republicans are and demanding everyone agree with him or else, and he's always talking about how great he is, and just look at all those camera angles he uses in a Special Comment. Get it?? Get it?? Get it??"

Oh, and, for the record...I actually thought Tina Fey and McGrampy were funny!

17. It was satire.
It is supposed to be over-the-top and ridiculous, and no ill will was meant toward Keith, as Ben Affleck is a huge liberal.

It seems to me like the whole thing was showing what the Republicans see and how they feel when they watch Keith.

But yeah, it did seem like the Olbermann Watch version of what Keith is like, which is why I didn't find it funny. It had almost no ground in reality, which is what it would have had to be funny.

If they had set it up that way, it could have been better. For example, their "3 a.m. phone call" in which Obama is president but doesn't know what the hell to do and calls Hillary, nervous and smoking up a storm, while she is the soul of calm, was obviously meant to be a parody of how Hillary felt Obama would behave under such circumstances. It had no grounds in the reality of what we've seen from Obama, but it was funny because it was supposed to be HER depiction of how he would react. (Interestingly enough, a lot of DU'ers didn't find THAT funny because they thought it was an unrealistic portrayal of Obama. Yes, but that was the point.)

29. I hear ya, Berry.
Personally, I didn't think it was very funny at all. It seemed to me that it was written by someone who only until recently started to watch Keith, or watched various video clips to get an idea of what to parody.

But then again, I have never found much of SNL that funny. The opening sketch had two moments that I laughed at: "These campaigns cost a lot of money" - "YES, they do." and the McCain Fine Gold reference.

I will give Ben credit, though. After watching Keith again, then hearing Ben's imitation, he got his voice and mannerisms down rather well (other than talking too fast).

I'm not comedy-challenged... I just have a high meter, and to me, the sketch didn't live up to its potential. I'd rather watch Darryl Hanna do Tweety again. :)

WAAAAAY over the top. If Keith hadn't wanted us to know about it, he wouldn't have mentioned it on his show. I'll bet he mentions it Monday. (I had to resist the urge to type "I betcha." :argh: I do not like THAT WOMAN- but I lurve Tina Fey, lurved Tina "BP", that is, "BeforePalin").

Just my two cents, however belatedly. :)

Good luck to us all on Tuesday. Fingers and toes crossed.

25. KO's "approval" may have been more of a business decision rather than a comedic one.
To be the basis for an SNL sketch right after the opening shows Mr. Olbermann has truly arrived on the scene.

whether or not he liked it, or whether or not he wanted us to know about it. (sigh...I'm talking to the walls, aren't I??)

24. No you're not talking to the walls. The sketch was a failure.
A good parody needs to have an element of truth. I mean seriously, the cat? Living with his mother? All crap.

If they showed him going overboard with attacking O'Reilly, they may have had something. But not even one mention of his arch nemesis?!?

26. No, you're not talking to walls at all, Berry!
:hi:
I'm not sure why I thought it was funny, but I did. Maybe because I thought that Keith had "made it" by being parodied on SNL, not that it matters a hill of beans to anyone except a few folks, like me. I admit that Ben's portrayal wasn't anything at all like the "real Keith;" didn't look or sound like him very much.....It is causing quite an unexpected reaction elsewhere, though. Here's a link I saw from Daily Kos titled "Holy Don Pardo's Pants: I'm A McCain Talking Point" http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/11/3/122622/582/956/650959

I think part of me was happy that the skit actually aired, because, if I remember correctly, didn't Keith tell us that SNL was going to do a skit about him "if it wasn't cut?"

I respect your opinion Berry. Everyone is different. I'm getting sensitive lately about folks around DU and Daily Kos talking about Rachel being so negative and sarcastic. I don't see that, but that's my opinion.

Take care!!

27. Hey, you have a right to your own funny bone, too.
What I objected to was the high volume (and this on DU in general) of people saying they laughed their socks off, and implying that anyone who didn't a) lacked a sense of humor and b) was just suffering a hangup about not wanting to see their precious Keith parodied.

As for poor Rachel, did you see my post on this recent phenomenon in which various people are piling on her? I'm #46 on this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=7716438

It seems that no one can enjoy popularity nowadays without a wave soon coming of people finding fault with that person/saying that person ain't really so great/yadda yadda. The backlash. As predictable as rain to a rheumatic. Oh well.

I'm actually hoping that Mad Magazine did a great parody of Keith--I heard they have one this month. I have to find it.

28. Thanks for that link, Berry.
Your #46 is very observant. I've stopped reading the Rachel threads for the last few days-just too nasty, IMO, particularly on Daily Kos.

Sorry, I hadn't realized there was so much flack toward those who didn't find the SNL Keith/Ben skit funny. I hope you didn't think I was giving you any, 'cause there was none intended, okay?

Have a good evening. I hope all goes well with the election tomorrow, and no unexpected "surprises" like in 2000 and 2004.
