KOEB 7/8/05
"C'mere."

"Yeah, I mean *you*...you, right there in front of the computer...who else does it look like I'm talking to? Come over here a second...I have something important to share, with you and only you...Yeah...right here. Right up here, face to face...Yeah, that's right...mmm. Now, isn't that better? Now we can talk.

"Now...here's what I have to say. It's a very important secret, and I'm whispering it only to YOU.

*whisper* "I would really, really like it if you would do something special for me...what? Well, this...I would really, really enjoy it if you would...

"...watch Countdown tonight. Yes, watch Countdown. There will be lots of serious news, all of it reported with respect and sensitivity. There may even be a little time for snark. After all, it's Friday night. We'll see.

"So, please join me for Countdown. ...What?? You were expecting some more intimate message? Something more *secret* and *personal*? Well, sorry to disillusion you, ladies, but this is it. It's like that part in 'A Christmas Story' when Ralphie thinks he's about to decode a special secret message from Little Orphan Annie on his decoder ring, and it turns out to be nothing but 'BE SURE TO DRINK YOUR OVALTINE.' Sorry, but MSNBC blew a heck of a lot of the promo budget on the show in May and there's really not much left, so now we have to advertise on the cheap. Please forgive me. I know you will.

"What's that you say? 'Like hell'? What was that other thing you said after that? Mumbling about something else you hoped I would ask you to do? I couldn't hear you. You'll have to come closer. C'mere for a second..."

28. Its actually pretty nice right now
a little humid but not hot. Now tomorrow it'll be hot again and it does help to not get hit so bad over it.

Ferrets are ok though a bit stressed because the are all out together. I decided Peachy and Pixel would have to learn to get along with the other. Quiet right now though interrupted once in a while with ferret screams.

90. I look at it like this:
While I'm here on this earth, I will eat meat. When I die, the animals will get their revenge. You know, the old "food for worms" thing.

It's not like it's all weighted in favor of me.

Besides, how do we know how much it pains a carrot to be yanked out of the ground by the hair and eaten? To say "I won't eat anything with a mother or a face" is to exhibit bias in favor of life forms that have mothers and faces, and against those that don't.

And that was my lecture for tonight. Thank you. (wishing I had a bowing smiley)

I KNOW how to survive miserable winters. I've had so many years of experience! And they tend not to destroy your home most of the time.

Of course, there is the tornado thing. But I lived through five of them touching down in a very hilly part of upstate NY, so don't tell me they are just a Midwestern problem!

154. OK. I must call attention to an unintentionally funny sequence of posts.
I posted a joke about Crispini in response to her, ah, gas emissions allegedly experienced from eating cabbage and implying they were as bad for the environment as not signing Kyoto.

To which gk replied that it's no wonder Crispini has to use cuffs to get her men because her gases must scare them away.

And somehow or other, the sequence of posts ended up so the next one was...the Rev saying:

"Yeah - and people bitch about the cold in Wisconsin."

(which, originally, was a reference to how she prefers cold to hurricanes...but turned into a seeming complaint about quite a different source of, ah, high winds)

128. of course it's been done long ago
everything old is new again. I'm sure we'll hear them. Which network first? I'm hoping "Weather Channel" will nobly refrain. I'm sure the local channels won't be able to help themselves, but the local broadcasts are about half a step above "who's killing what".

171. Just a second, that is not entirely true.
It is not true that CNN never had an original idea.

Back in 1981, they had the original idea to take a chance on a kid barely out of college with radio and print experience, but no TV broadcasting experience, to help them cover sports.

And the rest, as they say, is history. :-)

103. I bought the DVD of the whole shebang as a present for
my husband and we watched it bit by bit for several nights. Screamingly funny. Actually, I read some Blackadder episodes long before I ever saw them, as we had a book of the scripts for the series and it was one of the things I read to stay awake when I got up to pump milk in the middle of the night after Amy gave up that feeding (we needed the milk for later in the day). So there I'd be chortling over Blackadder's antics (turnip!) at 1am and that would wake my husband, not me getting out of bed or the sound of the pump wheezing away, but me laughing in the next room.

Blackadder II was my favorite as well.

177. or at least not rely on spellchecker
although maybe they're working so fast they don't catch some typos. I like to think of myself as being pretty "with it" regarding spelling, word usage & grammar, but when I go back & re-read something I've written & that I'm quite proud of, I'm often  to find some really big honking errors. It's especially  when they appear in court briefs & motions....stuff that I've filed & other people get to read. :+

So, I'm more than willing to cut some slack on this issue....but really, caption folks, Spellchecker is not your friend.

179. my college prof had a theory
and this was back in the day when you had to type on a machine called a "typewriter." ah the joy of the days when you had to take out a ruler and mark off 2" at the bottom of the page so you had space for your footnotes due to evil profs who insisted those who used endnotes were evildoers. ;)

It goes: You'll be able to find all but the most embarassing typos because those are the ones smart enough to hide from you behind other words, but will gladly spring forward & shout "nyah nyah nyah" to whoever is grading your paper.

this was the one prof who let typos slide by unless there were too many...then she'd write "have you heard of a dictionary?" in the margins.....

180. I have known writers who won't even *spellcheck* their work!
They figure, they're the "creative" people--doing all that boring spellchecking stuff is the editor's job! Editors must like that boring kind of work, or they wouldn't be editors! :grr:

I work both sides of the street, as Keith would put it. I write AND edit. And I have too much pride in what I write not to edit it before I let someone else see it. That doesn't necessarily mean I'll have caught everything, but at least I will have tried. I'm not too damn lazy or sloppy or careless to even try. Nor do I think editing and proofreading are "beneath" me the way some writers do who think of editors as "the janitors of wordsmithing."

And one thing I have learned in my time...it's amazing what kind of grammatical mistakes lawyers can make. Despite the fact that some of them have a tendency to think that just because they have a J.D., their grammar is impeccable and no one else knows anything about the English language.

one of the best Countdown's EVER!!!

Hi everyone. Keith is in top form tonight, has covered every story with his usual class, wit, and intellect with a healthy and well directed snark factor of 11. Plus, he is wearing my favorite suit, the charcoal gray and a yummy tie.

I love that he called Jeb Bush on his hideous hypocrisy and exposed about his under the radar dropping of the investigation into Terry Shiavo's death. Again, a * proves to be pond scum.

It's been a sad and frightening two days with the London bombings and Andy Stephenson's death. I really needed KO tonight and he didn't disappoint.

He's a gem.

124. we did our best for him
and that's what matters. And he knew we were doing our best. Everyone talks about how awful the freeper crap was, and it was plenty bad and I'm sure it was horrible for him. But think about how amazing the fund-raising was and what that must have made him feel like. Realistically, I didn't have a lot of hope but I wanted to see him have that surgery, so I donated, and I suspect many other DUers had similar feelings. I think it meant a lot to Andy that so many people cared enough to help him, even when the odds were bad, even when they didn't really know him. And he's always gonna have that memory and so are we.

123. You have to catch it, CC.
It was absolutely adorable.

Don't turn away when they start showing footage of the Running of the Bulls ("where we always root for the bulls!") on the screens around the set. It will look as if they're not going to show Keith again, but they pull away and show his desk one more time, and it's at that moment that he realizes he's back on camera and gives this adorable big wave. Looks like a kid in his first school play waving to Mom and Dad.

:hi: Goodbye Keith! When you're on Countdown, Mondays can't come soon enough!

162. I get punchy on lack of sleep
you know how anything gets funny if you're tired enough. I remember going to a corporate software class years and years ago and one of the attendees was this Canadian who'd get really wacky around 4am. He'd do this impression of a man with three heads talking to himself (each hand was a head) and at 4am, it was actually quite amusing.

173. Watched the end of the re-air last night, and was reminded that
he didn't just realize he was visible again, he deliberately LEANED BACK PAST THE SCREEN to make sure that he could be seen on camera again, THEN gave his vigorous goodbye wave.

In other words, he WANTED to be seen. He WANTED to wave goodbye.

*That* deserves a

but the Muslim guy was pointing out that, well, American bombs killed civilians in the invasion. It was quite a heated exchange. Tucker, of course, was insisting that they were trying to avoid civilians. Tucker, dude, the keyword there is TRYING. They didn't always succeed AS YOU WELL KNOW.

174. Sad...One final comment, anyway...
...note that at the end of the space-special promo, Keith went out of his way to say that the bliv's comment about "who knows where the journey will end" was a reference to space exploration, "not MSNBC."

I thought that was a telling comment on his part. His little way of saying that he knows the rumors are flying, that people are wondering how much longer MSNBC, or at least MSNBC As We Know It, is going to last.

He doesn't seem too worried so far, which is reassuring. Because I admit that whenever I find something I really like, I worry about its not lasting.

Maybe Keith feels unconcerned because he feels there will be a place for him at the network no matter what happens to it, and feels assured that it will continue to exist. Then again, maybe he's in a really cocky mood because he feels he's doing such a good job mending his napalmed bridges, rivers, etc. with ESPN that if all else fails, he can always end up back there. Or maybe there's something else in the works that we don't even know about.

All I know is, it sure would be nice to know!!
