Just rewatched "the rant."
Wow, for so many reasons. I mean, first, Network. That says a lot right there. Then, a news show that makes fun of itself and does real news in the same show. And self-referential. And funny. And intelligent. And (of course) the incomparable and lovely KO.... :loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya::loveya:

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant in so many different ways.

You know, I'm very picky with my bumper space, but I think I'm gonna go get one of those stickers. And I may have to treat my friends and family to yet another round of "You MUST watch Countdown!" I've only turned one of them into an addict so far. The brainwashing will continue!

I just wish it wasn't so damn hard to find MSNBC in Dallas. It is not exactly on prime cable real estate. I mean, "Turn the A/B switch on the back of your TV over to B, then tune into the verrrrry last channel (42!)" -- that makes people feel confused just listening to it.

1. that's not so hard to remember.
"The very last channel" might be easier to locate than some channel in the middle of the run. If they can't remember the number (hey, 42 is a perfect number for our Keef, is it not?), all they have to do is run up the channels until they hit the last one.

And the bit from Network was so perfect, after days of this Schiavo hype where almost every other "news" show is doing wall-to-wall "they're killing her" messages with varying degrees of subtlety. No one thinks to remind us that Terri expressed her wishes to some friends as well as her husband and it's hardly surprising that someone in their mid-20's would have failed to execute a written living will. Somehow, it's about keeping her alive, but not about treating her as a person whose wishes are to be respected, and that's just driving me batshit and it does make me want to go to my window and yell. Some of the media aren't just covering this story, they're feeding it, and that's shameful.

And I totally loved the bit where KO stalked back to his desk and doused himself. Gosh, I haven't seen Network since it was first released. Gotta go rent it this weekend.

2. '42 is a perfect number for our Keef, is it not?' - gk
It's the meaning of life, the universe and everything, if memory serves.

I just bought my husband the firt 6 episides of "Hitchhkers' Guide" for his birthday. Anyone seen it? We haven't watched it yet, so I don't know what to expect...

3. have you heard the radio series?
All in all, I think you'll like it.

In some ways, I thought it was better than the radio series, and in other ways, it was inferior. Biggest plus: the graphics for the the actual Guide were great. Oh, and the actor playing Arthur Dent, he was good, too.

Biggest disappointment was the actress playing Trillian. In the TV series, she's a bleach blonde with a rather grating high-pitched voice). In the radio series, she's intelligent and has a pleasant voice. Oh, and Zaphod Beetlebrox's (sp?) third arm and extra head look pretty fake, but the cheesiness of British serials is just part of their charm to some.

Wanna bend your mind a little? Try Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere".

4. Can't wait to see it now!
Thanks, gk. You're right about the cheesiness (no offense to Rev) of special effects in British sci-fi series -- Dr. Who being the most famous example. In no way does it detract from the story.

It matches the Brits' awful sound engineering, in fact. (May have contributed to the grating quality of that voice!)

6. Yes, but it's the very last channel...
AFTER two channels of static. :wtf: It's almost like they're deliberately hiding it.

9. Maybe they need a buffer zone
to make sure the accurate information leaking out of Keith's show doesn't find its way into any of the other "news" programs?

12. It's 53 on Wide Open West... Could yours be higher, CC?
Fortunately, MSNBC is clustered with what I call the cable company's "news ghetto" -- along with CNN, Headline News and FoxNews -- so it can't get lost.

As a matter of fact I'm hoping some folks will be surfing through MSNBC on their way from Fox to CNN, notice a handsome devil throwing papers in the air, and say, "Yow! who's that? and where has he been all my life!"

14. 666?
 Go ahead, spill. For me, regular CNN is 25, CNN-Headlines is 26, and MSNBC is 73. Not sure what channel Fox News is... 40-something, I think. The CSPANs are spread out, 51 and 76, go figure.

one number right. Did finally post it. Just with Keith being on 69 and reading the soft porn chapters wasn't sure if I should say it out loud.

CNN is 30 and Headline news is 32 have no clue where Fox is.
