Devon Hollahan, Missing American, Fell Drunk In River, German Police Say

FRANKFURT — An American student who disappeared in November most likely fell drunkenly into the city's Main River, Frankfurt police said Friday.

Devon Hollahan, 22, who had been teaching English in Prague since July, was traveling back to a hostel after a concert with a friend, who stopped to ask for directions at about 3 a.m. on Nov. 21. When the friend turned back around, Hollahan was gone.

Police said in a statement that dogs traced Holllahan's trail to the banks of the river, and that authorities found a shoe believed to be his in the waters.

Police said they "have to assume that Devon Hollahan, in a helpless state in connection with alcohol, fell into the Main."

Missing 22-year-old teacher, Devon Hollahan's body found in river

Much to the dismay of friends and family, the body of Devon Hollahan, a teacher from Arizona who has been missing since November 21, 2009, was found in the Rhine River. Hollahan disappeared after going to a concert with a friend while on break from a teaching job in Prague. German officials indicated his body was found on December 15, 2009, and a DNA test revealed it was indeed Devon Hollahan.

Josh Friedman, who attended the concert with Hollahan, told authorities after having a few drinks and hanging out with the band, the two men left the concert. He indicated they were confused as to how to get back to the hostel and after Friedman stopped to ask for directions, Hollahan was no longer there.

According to the Associated Press, Frankfurt police do not suspect foul play and believe Hollahan fell into the river causing him to drown.
