Here is a good Indian film recommendation
Grand Avenue
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116443/

It was done a ten years ago. I haven't finished it, I'm watching it in a class and it is just blowing me away. Fantastic. The link will give you much more info, but it is a two- part series that was shot for HBO and came out about 10 years ago. It has some solid acting. Tantoo Cardinal is in it, and she's wonderful. (played Graham Greene's wife in Dances With Wolves) It's a pretty low budget film, but still extremely interesting. Focuses a lot on minority women issues, more than anything else. Nicely done film, I'm definitely enjoying it. :)

3. Black Robe is intense.
Probably the best Native American film I've ever seen. I saw it when it it first came out, but I think I'll rent it to show the kids who are into independent films and old enough to fully absorb it.

Last year I showed them Thunderheart. A bigger budget movie (starring Val Kilmer), but quite powerful.

Hi, just stopped in to say hello. Always a strong supporter of Native American issues.

5. A few more to see.
Powwow Highway (1988) and Smoke Signals (1998).

6. What about . . .
Skins? I believe it is from the same group that did Smoke Signals. Also, Into the West was pretty good. It was kindove whitewashed in a couple of places (the piece on boarding schools in particular) but it touched subject matter I have never before seen protrayed in film.

7. yes, Skins is the same director as Smoke Signals
Chris Eyre. :)

I couldn't quite get into "Into The West." I am going to give it another shot though. :)

8. Also, "Where the Spirit Lives"
a Canadian film about two Blackfoot children kidnapped from their parents and sent to a repressive boarding school early in the twentieth century.

I don't think it's out on DVD, but it is on VHS. It was shown on PBS (at least in Oregon) more than 10 years ago.
