Oil & Congress don't Mix
Oil & Congress don’t Mix!

Please join our Facebook Group page! "Oil & Congress don't Mix! Cut off the flow of campaign contributions."

This is a grassroots campaign to cut off campaign contributions from Oil & Gas companies (individual and PAC contributions) to members of the United States congress. We believe the cozy relationship between BP and the US congress led to under-regulation which made the gulf oil spill of 2010 possible.

Oil & Gas companies will always try to buy off our elected officials. It is up to regular citizens to hold elected officials accountable for money accepted from corporations like BP. Irresponsible companies cannot be relied upon to self-regulate, nor can members of congress, bribed by such companies, be relied upon to implement necessary regulations. Consequently, everyday citizens must stand together to hold our elected officials accountable for such campaign contributions.
The “Oil & Congress don’t Mix” campaign is non-partisan. Democrats and Republicans accept oil and gas contributions. Powerful grassroots campaigns are often organized and financed by political parties, unions, or corporations. All of these groups have incentive to protect members of congress. This campaign is organized and administered by average, everyday citizens. We are unaffiliated. Our agenda is pure and simple. We want our country back. We want our “representative democracy” to represent the people, instead of the ultra-wealthy and the corporate interest.

The tragedy:

“The current worst-case estimate of what's spewing into the Gulf is about 2.5 million gallons a day. Anywhere from 67 million to 127 million gallons have spilled since the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 workers and blew out the well 5,000 feet underwater. BP PLC was leasing the rig from owner Transocean Ltd.”

-Associated Press

"BP regularly lobbies on Capitol Hill. In 2009, the company spent a massive $16 million to influence legislation. During the first quarter of 2010, it spent $3.53 million on federal lobbying efforts, ranking it second (behind ConocoPhillips) among all oil and gas industry interests."

The Oil & Congress Don't Mix Campaign is organized by members of the "Citizens for Corporate Accountability.”
