CNN: Democrats poised to win majority of governorships
Democrats poised to win majority of governorships
November 8, 2006

Eliot Spitzer celebrates with Sen. Hillary Clinton. CNN projects Spitzer to win New York's governor race.

(CNN) -- Democrats were well on their way Tuesday to winning control of a majority of governorships for the first time in 12 years.

Democrats need a net pickup of four governorships in 36 races to get to the magic number of 26 -- and with polls closed in more than half of the states, CNN projected Democratic gains in six of the state posts. Heading into the balloting, five GOP-held seats were considered likely to switch, and races for six others were down to the wire.

By contrast, just four Democrat-held governorships appear to be within possible Republican reach, and two of those were leaning Democratic.

Democrats appear on their way to picking up six new governorships:

In Massachusetts, former Clinton Justice Department official Deval Patrick is projected become the state's first black governor and only the second elected nationally since Reconstruction

State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer will succeed retiring GOP Gov. George Pataki in New York

Rep. Ted Strickland is the projected winner in Ohio after defeating Secretary of State Ken Blackwell

Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley is poised to defeat Maryland's Republican incumbent Gov. Robert Ehrlich

In Arkansas, GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee is term-limited and CNN projects Democrat Mike Beebe will defeat Republican Asa Hutchinson, a former congressman and undersecretary in the Department of Homeland Security

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter is the projected winner in the race to replace Colorado GOP Gov. Bill Owens, who is term limited....
