Nominate Barbara Boxer for the 2005 Jefferson Awards

I wish they had more than one award per year to give away because it wasn't just Barbara Boxer who contested the 2004 Ohio election. I really think Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, John Conyers, etc. all deserve one.

I opt for Barbara Boxer by the mere fact that she stood ALONE amongst her colleagues and, to me, that should raise the bar for all the senators to act for fair elections.

1. Conyers did all the hard work

It is still unclear if Boxer followed her conscience or simply "took one for the team".

2. I picked Boxer because she was the ONLY one to stand within the senate

If she had not done that there would have NEVER been a debate. And even if she did take one for the team, it is our team isn't it?

I totally agree with you that Conyers and Tubbs-Jones, etc. deserve all the credit and accolades as well and I hate having to pick just one. You should pick whoever your conscience tells you to if you want to nominate at all.

And admittedly, it's partly a political statement on my part. Boxer's now being attacked as we knew she would and this is my way of saying to those who do that, back off, the people see her as standing for a true democracy even if they don't.

3. If nobody stood, I would have left the party in a heartbeat.

I think the DNC knew there were others like me. I think Boxer took one for the team.

Every Democratic Senator should have stood, and you want to give an award to the only one who's doing her f-ing job?!

Sorry to appear ungrateful, but one Senator out of a hundred willing to do the right thing is not a reason to hand out prizes.

4. You're not ungrateful, you're understandably pissed.

And it is pathetic when only 1 out of 100 will stand and do their job. But I'm trying to be pragmatic. As I've said, it's a strategic thing. This Jefferson Award is media driven. What does nominating Boxer do? It gets the media attention, which has been compliant though lack of coverage over the issue of election fraud and disenfranchisement. The media are the sponsors - they put money into this thing and want attention to these awards. It behooves them not to. They way I see it, if fate hands you a much needed monkey wrench and it doesn't hurt anybody, throw it. Save Conyers and Tubbs-Jones for the Congressional Medal of Freedom (yeah, I know that's been dumbed down too) which is much more appropriate.

Like I said, though, I respect your decision whatever it may be.
