I switched gyms this week.
Previously, I had been a member of the local Y. It is a beautiful facility and they offer a ton of services to their members. High quality child care facility, three pools, a really nice fitness center, dance, gymnastics and swimming lessons for the kids. But I had become dissatisfied.

First, we moved and the facility was no longer convenient. But the main problem, they began to push the christianity really hard, with an evangelical intensity. Finally, I realized they were giving out copies of Focus on the Family magazine. So I protested strenuously. Their committee is meeting about it this week. But regardless of their answer, I no longer feel welcome at my local Y

So I switched to the Jewish Community Center. Great facility, closer to my home, and no fundamentalist, hatemongering Religious Emphasis Committee :bounce:

I am settling in to my new routine. The kids like the child watch. so that is good. But it is soooooo difficult to restart a routine. And isn't it crazy when you can't even workout with out getting mired in politics? Sheesh!

1. Our YMCA recently extended "Family" memberships to gay and
lesbians households. This was the right thing to do but pretty astounding for Richmond, Virginia. Celebrate progress where you find it.

Good luck getting back to your routine. Sorry about the politics at your Y.

3. Mine won't give memberships to gay and lesbian households.
And that has been bothering me, too. I mean I wouldn't patronize an organization that discriminated against African-American or other minorities. Why should I patronize an organization that discriminates based on sexual orientation?

That, plus one of my best friends is a lesbian. She and her partner can't join so their son can't do playdates with us. Really brings it home when you see how it affects the families.

5. I meant playdates at the Y pool.
I posted without reading, argh. Of course my friend can still do playdates with us. Just not at the YMCA pool.

2. I feel very lucky to have my gym at work
I work at a college (a graduate school actually) and we have a pretty posh facility. The beauty of it is that being an employee means that I can use this facility for a fraction of what it would cost me to join a private gym out in "the real world". (And by fraction, I don't mean 9/10!! :silly:)

I don't know what I'd do if I had to shop for a gym. I'd be lost!

4. And that lost feeling is why I have been avoiding this.
Everyone who works out seriously knows that routine is everything. But FOF is just more than I can stand.
