How about a DU UU meetup to volunteer on the Mississippi Coast?

As you may or may not know, most of what I've been doing since graduating from seminary in May 2005 is volunteering on the Mississippi Coast doing Katrina relief/recovery. (I even got written up on the UUA web site: http://uua.org/news/gulfcoastrelief/rebuilding/.)

Well, I also wrote a grant proposal to hire a volunteer coordinator/community minister for the Mississippi Coast for one year. New Orleans and Baton Rouge had volunteer coordinators, but no one was in Mississippi. Anyway, the grant got accepted, and they hired me to be the UU volunteer coordinator. I start on July 31.

So I started thinking, what if the DU UUS had a volunteer meetup on the Coast? That would combine all my favorite things: UUism, DUism, coastal recovery! :hi:

There are all kinds of jobs to do, from house gutting to playground building to Spanish translation to playing music for the local church service to... well, whatever your gifts are, I'm sure I could find a good use for them with the groups the UUSC/UUA Gulf Coast Relief Fund has partnered with in Mississippi.

Volunteers will get some orientation on race, class, and (hopefully this next) environmental justice issues on the Coast, as well as have a kind of covenant group meeting during the week to process the experience. All food and lodging will be provided.

Just a thought. Because I love the UU DUers! :grouphug:
