What do we do about hatred and intolerance ?
Perhaps I am way off in what I should be doing here at DU. I think that this should be a place where I can come to learn and obtain information, and also a place where I can give information. What I am finding recently is a distinct hostility towards Islam and also an unwillingness to read information given-it is as if some here (by all means not everyone) have already made up their minds on things and have bought into the notion that Islam is an intolerant, hateful faith, and that no member of that faith is doing anything about it. I've also been here and have read some of the remarks made about people on spiritual paths; I'm getting the same feeling with these posts as well.

My question is: should I continue posting on SOUP? On topics about Islam? Or is it basically a lost cause?

1. "Seekers On Unique Paths"
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 11:17 PM by greyl
was an attractive title to me because I've "been through" an incredible variety of beliefs on my search of making sense of this world and my place in it.
The rules of this group say that belief in a Deity per se isn't necessary to communicate here, and I thought that meant that people that wanted to talk here wouldn't be pigeonholed based on what they don't believe.

Based on my few conversations here, the ideal of the name of the group isn't being lived up to.

That said, I'm almost 100% certain that you empathize with the 'core' religious experience, and that you see the ritualistic differences of organized religions as being related to the appropriateness of the message to the audience. (Joseph Campbell)

Maybe it's time for the moderate soupers to take back the ideal of "seeking a unique path"? ;)

edit: We'd have to identify the causes of hatred and intolerance to sucessfully fight them, right?
Doesn't the title of this group assume that all organized religions are unworthy?
What does "Unique Path" mean to you?

2. It would be kind of nice to have a place where i don't have
to defend my position. Actually, I refuse to defend my position. All that happens are endless debates about nothing that go nowhere.

But I think you should just keep posting and damn the torpedoes. Maybe we just just use the ignore button - that is pretty passive.

I think knowing about islam is interesting - especially in these terrible times. So post away. I will read it.

3. Thanks!
In fact, I've taken your advice. It's so comforting to look at the word IGNORE after one of my posts and know that I won't be bothered by that person any more.

5. I'm always glad to see your posts - esp. on Islam
because not that many people around here are knowledgeable enough to comment from that perspective.

Recently I was surfing around and found this blogger. He doesn't update very often - but he is mostly interested in Islamic morality - as lived out in the US. You and others might be interested.

I don't know about posting in SOUP or not. I just drop in occasionally. But in general - on DU - esp. in threads in GD and Religion - I've been glad to see your POV.

:hi:
