I went to a beautiful Blue Christmas service the other night.
In case anyone isn't familiar with these services, they are for people who are not especially joyous during the Christmas season. I know they aren't especially common and a lot of people don't go because they think they'll be gloomy. Not at all! I've been to one in the past, and this year I really needed it because my mother died earlier in the year and this will be my first Christmas without her. And adding to my joyous holiday mood, I found out on the day of the service that my job has been eliminated as of January--fucking Merry Christmas to me.

Anyway, the service was so nice, just what I needed. There were a few hymns, some prayers, a short scripture reading, two different moments of silence--one to think and pray about things wrong in the world, and the other to do the same about our own lives. The minister lit 3 Advent candles during a responsive prayer, then we had communion, then each got a small candle, lit it and then lit however many tea candles (on two sides of the communion table and behind it) that we wanted to light. The service ended with a candlelit singing of "Silent Night" followed by benediction and a gorgeous postlude on piano. It was the most meaningful Christmas service I've experienced in a long time.

1. Aw, geez...
What a rotten thing to happen! You're one of many that I know have lost their jobs, and are very worried about what's going to happen next.

The year I lost my mom, I tried to keep Christmas as "normal" as possible, but burst in tears while putting up the tree. It's hard, because there's a hole where someone was ALWAYS there. Believe me, I know how hard it is. This year, I only put candles in the window.

I'm glad the Blue Christmas service was meaningful for you. I'm still trying to figure out how to "do" Christmas at church this year, and may well incorporate some of those ideas in the service.

You will be in my prayers, Prez.

2. My condolences for your mother's passing,Notmyprez.

and I'm so sorry to hear about your job!

My neighbor just lost his wife. She was only 53,
a beautiful person who had a smile on her face
and a kind word for everyone she met.
She was a true, progressive Christian and a friend of mine.

I'm glad you found a beautiful service that
helped you. It does sound very nice. :)

A lot of people are hurting right now and
could use a Blue Christmas service.
