Is anyone here familiar with the Calvary Chapel Churches?
I have an acquaintance in mind that gives new meaning to the term 'radical religious right,' and he attends the local Calvary Chapel. I read a brief history of them on the Religious Movements Page - part of University of Virginia.

The term 'Jesus People' was mentioned, and the fact that the pastors are encouraged to wear casual clothing.

But I did not get a sense of whether or not they would consider themselves Jim-Dobson-like or Jim-Wallis-like.

Info?

(I'm Ma'at - who sometimes posts here and on Seekers On Unique Paths - I'm a Religious Scientist - similar in philosphy to Unitarian-Universalist).

1. Jim Wallis types would not be radical right
I googled Calvary Chapel, and judging from their website, they look like fundamentalists and end-timers.

2. Indeed they are.
I attended one for a short time, mainly because I was chasing a girl who went there, and it is hardcore fundie. I mentioned to one of the youth pastors that my friend was a Mormon and the pastor had all us youth gather in a circle and pray for his salvation. It was really freaky.

3. Thanks!
Explains a lot. The attendee (the acquaintance who lives in the neighborhood) once told me, "As long as George W. Bush is in office, we will have peace." I started to reply that Dubya had never had anything whatsoever to do with peace, only killing and destruction and war, but my hubby dragged me away (we're trying for peace in the neighborhood for the kids' benefit).

5. Wow, talk about brainwashing!
They must have used the "super-heated pots 'n' pans" cycle on that friend. "As long as George W. Bush is in office, we will have peace." War is peace. Slavery is freedom. Have another cup of the nice Kool Aid.

6. Actually, I'm pretty sure this guy drank the whole pitcher of ..
Kool Aid.

I don't get into arguments with him because, as aforementioned, we are trying to keep peace in the neighborhood - but also because it is doubtful that I could get him to listen anyway.

8. God you got that right!
Unbelievable! This is so Orwellian, as you said: "War is Peace." Indeed. It's getting to that point in this country.

4. Not all are bad
I have a good friend who attends calvary chapel. I don't agree with his beliefs in many ways, but he is a good decent person.

On the other hand, the Calvary Chapel in the town 20min from here was a horrible place, that did some horrible things to my friends, which I'm not even going to go into, because despite the fact that you don't know me or my friends, it still just feels to personal to even talk about.

7. Got it.
Maybe one day you can describe it in general terms to me.

Thanks, Selwynn.

I just can't shake the feeling that they've crossed the line (in terms of the pro-Bush talk) in this particular congregation. Maybe one day, I will see for myself.

Thanks to all the DUers that responded.

Why do I have the unshakable feeling that they engage in that 'ex-gay' crud?
