Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

Tempus adest gratiae
Hoc quod optibamus,
Carmina laetitiae
Devote redamus.

Deus homo factus est
Natura mirante,
Mundus renovatus est
A Christo regnante.

Ezechielis porta
Clausa pertransitur,
Unde lux est orta
Salus invenitur.

Ergo nostra cantio,
Psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus Regi nostro.

Pardon the moment of exuberance - just listening to the Boston Camerata sing this and couldn't think of any other forum in which to post. :)

1. How dare you bring Latin into a Christian forum?!?!?!
Foreign languages are anti-Christian!

Take this crap over to the atheist - that is, America-hating - forum where it will not only be celebrated, it's liberal agenda will be worshiped.

:grr:

Christus - who is that, Satan?

As to the last verse, I can only assume it means:

Ergo nostra cantio Therefore, (my) nose (is to be) (worshipfully) praised
Psallat iam in lustro; Psalms I am (in) lust (with)
Benedicat Domino: Traitors, (like rows of) Dominoes:
Salus Regi nostro. Salute (my) kingly nose!

I bet you're Wiccan.

:P

3. LOL
That reminds me of some of the fake translations we linguistics grad students would come up with, such as "No me importa" ("I buy American") and "Grand jeté" ("the Concorde").

Some of the Latin ones I remember include:

"Cave canem" ("Beware! I may sing!")

"Sic transit gloria mundi" ("Gloria got sick on the bus on Monday")

8. We once worked out a declension chart for the noun
"doofus". I'll have to sit down and do it, but I remember my favorite was "dooforum".

11. Let's see if I can remember my Latin declensions:
Nom. sg. doofus "a doofus"
Gen. sg. doofi "of a doofus"
Dat. sg. doofo "to a doofus"
Abl. sg. doofo "with/by a doofus"
Acc. sg. doofum "a doofus" (as the direct object of a verb) Doofum video. "I see a doofus."
Voc. sg. doofe "oh, Doofus!"

Nom. pl. doofi "doofuses"
Gen. pl. dooforum "of doofuses"
Dat. pl. doofis "to doofuses"
Abl. pl doofis "by/with doofuses"
Acc. pl. doofos "doofuses" (as the direct object of a verb) Doofos videmus "We see doofuses."
Voc. pl. doofi "Oh, Doofuses!"

And then there's this classic by the early twentieth century Oxford professor AD Godley:

What is this that roareth thus?
Can it be a Motor Bus?
Yes, the smell and hideous hum
Indicant Motorem Bum!
Implet in the Corn and High
Terror me Motoris Bi:
Bo Motori clamitabo
Ne Motore caedar a Bo---
Dative be or Ablative
So thou only let us live:---
Whither shall thy victims flee?
Spare us, spare us, Motor Be!
Thus I sang; and still anigh
Came in hordes Motores Bi,
Et complebat omne forum
Copia Motorum Borum.
How shall wretches live like us
Cincti Bis Motoribus?
Domine, defende nos
Contra hos Motores Bos!

6. I believe the correct translation is:
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 06:10 PM by mycritters2
"Therefore my nose sings
Psalms about my lust.
Why, bless my dominoes,
I have one royal salty nose!"

I was at Boston College for a year. Them Jesuits know their Latin!

edited for spelling

7. Typical UCC feminist spin
:eyes:

I prefer a more literal, or let us say *proper*, translation. We don't need your gay-friendly feminist "interpretive" spin. The text already damned itself without you "re-imagining" it.

4. I'll attempt a real translation
I had one year of college Latin a couple of decades ago, and as a choral singer, I speak fluent Motet. :-)

Rejoice, rejoice, Christ is born of the Virgin Mary

The time of grace is here
That which we (something)
Songs of joy
Devotedly we (something)

God is made human
Nature seeing this
The world is remade
by Christ reigning

Ezekiel's closed door
Is passed through
(Something) light (something)
Salvation is brought in

Therefore our song
Thus may sound in (something)
and bless the Lord
Our king of salvation

At least I think that's what it means.

5. pretty good translation
one of my very favorite Christmas songs; the older the better, for me.

this is from Wikipedia:

Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born
Of the Virgin Mary, rejoice!
It is now the time of grace
That we have desired;
Let us devoutly return
Songs of rejoicing.
God has become man,
And nature marvels;
The world has been renewed
By Christ who is King.
The closed gate of Ezechiel
Has been passed through;
Hence the light rises
Salvation is found.
Therefore let our assembly
Now sing a hymn of purification
Let it give praise to the Lord:
greetings to our King.
