Youtube Malcolm X: Who taught you to hate yourself?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRSgUTWffMQ

MALCOLM X: Who taught you to hate the color of your skin? Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair? Who taught you to hate the shape of your nose and the shape of your lips? Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet? Who taught you to hate your own kind? Who taught you to hate the race that you belong to so much so that you don’t want to be around each other? You know. Before you come asking Mr. Muhammad does he teach hate, you should ask yourself who taught you to hate being what God made you.

You can't hate the roots of a tree

Sorry, but I needed this. I just had a bad experience with a very racially charged discussion about dating Indians, especially white women and Indian men. There was terrible shit thrown around but I was pleasantly surprised to see the strongest and most reasonable defenses of Indian men come from wonderful white women and Latina women and Afro-Caribbean women and other women who love and appreciate Indian men for who we are as individuals. They let go of the bullshit stereotypes and prejudice.

Even though I'm Indian and Catholic, I can relate to what this Black Muslim human rights activist had to say 40 years ago. I thought I would share it with you.

1. I'm so sorry to read...
...that you had a racially charged discussion, about dating multiculturally/interracially.
I'm glad to see (and read) that you found some comfort in the links you provided.

It's unfortunate that so many in the world still lack the ability to be open minded about these matters. It's easier for them to impose their views and limited thinking on others. Honestly, it's their loss in my opinion. The world will continue to grow more diverse, not less. Those that refuse to embrace these changes, and adapt will find themselves quite lost--with nothing but hate mongering extremists to relate to.

2. Fortunately it's getting better
 right back at you.

That racially charged discussion was on a dating forum, and it apparently attracted all sorts of characters including racists and those who admit they have never even met someone of another race in their whole lives.

There's room for improvement, and things are improving. Some of my Hmong girlfriend's family didn't want her dating me at first because I was dark-skinned. The odd thing was that they love Indian movies and music but were wary of having an Indian person dating one of their family members. They thought it would be scandalous if anyone in their Hmong community saw us together and told us not to go to certain places like the Hmong farmer's market or large family gatherings. But they changed their minds as they got to know me and realized I'm not so bad. ;) They still don't like to see us holding hands or showing affection but that might be a separate issue. None of them show affection to their SO's. My girlfriend's 5 year old niece went from "He looks so different from us." to "When can he take us to the park again?".
