What goes with this floor?
Let me preface this by saying, I know many of you have given me input on several things I have yet to act on, but I PROMISE you I will really be tackling these projects in the near future! Funds have got my plans on hold, but that doesn't stop me from thinking and planning, and when I am back on track financially soon, I will start on these projects one-by-one.

OK, so, when I ripped up the 25 year old matted, disintegrating, green shag carpet :puke: , I found decent hardwood floors in half the house (front living room, hall, and bedrooms). To the right of the living room/hall is the kitchen/dining area, which has hideous warped, peeling, cracked linoleum. I'll need a pro to finish this floor because the wood under the linoleum is very uneven and rotten in places. Beyond this room is the other living room, which was formerly a garage, so under the previously described carpet is concrete.

Here is a picture of the wood floor (Chance's hiney is to the left! )

Sooooo... what will look good with this floor as far as wall colors and also tile for the adjoining room so it will flow nicely?(also considering it still needs to be spruced up but will likely remain about the same shade)

Here is a tile that I liked online:

Matching furniture is not an issue, since I have old living room furniture and plan to get slip covers. I tend to like jewel tones and deep colors for furniture, like burgandy, emerald green, deep blue. But when I see people do really dramatic colors with walls, I just don't know if I could get away with that here. So, do any of you decorating gurus have any ideas on wall colors to tie my dark wood in with a rich colored love seat?

1. If you like rich jewel tones in your fabrics...
...upholstery, draperies, rugs, etc., consider selecting a color palette of those FIRST. That floor will go marvelously with just about anything except Boring Beiges, so you're in luck.

Select your palette of rich colors for the other stuff, and then take samples to the paint store with you, and select a much lighter shade of one of the colors, to be glazed with the darker color in a translucent, almost transparent glaze. The walls will glow softly with color and set off the floor nicely.

So, just as an example, you go with "peacock" as the color palette, which gives you shades of deep teal, blue-green, hunter green, and gold. So you go with mostly the blue shades for your upholstery, draperies, etc., and some hunter green in cushions, maybe a rug or wall hanging. Maybe a couple of purple accents. You pick up the golds in trim, piping, and soft old-gold picture frames, candle holders, etc. For your walls, you could select a much-lightened version of the hunter green (add more white. No, more. Still more... LOL) and then glaze it with the deep hunter in a translucent glaze. You'll have a gorgeously opulent room. Maybe you could stencil a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design on a window pane, or splurge on a Liberty of London print for some cushions.

Enjoy!

vicariously,
Bright

2. WOW Thanks! You sound like a pro!
I will most likely be ordering the slipcovers in November or December, depending on how well I do at budgeting. I was pretty amazed at how much beautiful stuff I found at Surefit.com! Much more affordable than new furniture, looks beautiful and most are machine washable, important when one is a foster mommy to multiple furkids.

So, I will take your advice and decide on the slipcovers first and then look at the colors. I don't know anything about the translucent glazes, etc, but it sounds lovely, and I will read up on it!

3. Bright said it all
but I'd add that the way to find a wall color that is easiest to live with is to pick a color you really like, then go two shades lighter. Paint always looks darker when you get it on the wall than it did on that paint sample.

My color palette was determined by an Axminster carpet I found dirt cheap because the people who'd ordered it had returned it, and it runs to red orange, teal, gold, black, and sage green. Slip covers make all the thrift shop furniture work.

4. Thanks!
Yeah, I am afraid of picking a color and having it come out too dark, but then if I pick too light, I don't want a total pastel!LOL

I ordered a Surefit catalog after seeing a commercial, and I was AMAZED at how beautiful everything was! PLUS, washable, unlike upholstery! I am excited, because I feel like I will be ordering brand new furniture!:-)

My coworker has a desk calendar in an African theme with some really cool jewel tones in it, and I took a page so I could compare colors. I was looking at her calendar and thinking, "loveseat, wingback, walls!" LOL

5. I've got 3 of SureFit's covers for my thrift shop couch
Back in the good old days, I found the selection and price much better if I ordered them online.

And yes, they're great covers.
