I have a bizarre question (crocheting)
My friend is trying to crochet a rug out of macrame yarn and a Q hook for her parent's RV when they go to Florida. She is using an afghan pattern. She has run into the problem that she is trying figure out how much macrame yarn she will need. She knows how much yarn she would need for each of the colors for the afghan. Does anyone know how to figure out how much macrame yarn she would need?

1. Crochet a sample, then do the math.
I've never crocheted anything big, but this is how I would do it.

Using the macrame yarn, your friend could crochet a six-inch square in the predominant stitch. Then, unravel the sample and measure the amount of yarn used, and use that number to determine how much yarn would be used in the completed rug.

For example:

Let's say that the completed rug is expected to be 2'x3', or 864 square inches.

It takes three yards of yarn to crochet a 6" square, or 36 square inches.

36 sq. inches goes into 864 square inches a total of 24 times.

24 times 3 yards of yarn = 72 yards needed to complete a 2'x3' rug.

2. She knows...
That it takes 1-100 yard skein to do 3 rows of sc (the whole thing is in sc). The only problem is that it is an afghan with color changes. In other words, it is the Mickey Mouse pattern put out by Leisure Arts. She knows she needs 52 100 yard skeins total. She is trying to figure out how much she would need to do all of the color changes.

Sorry, I should have explained that better before, but I am also having a hard time wrapping my mind around this math problem.

3. Ok, fellow crocheters...
We think we solved this. Since her stitches for this project are so huge, she just ripped out one stitch - which was a 1"x1" all on its own :wow: The amount of macrame yarn required for that one stitch was 10" (I know, it surprised us too)!! So now she has to count each square and multiply it by the 10" to figure out how many inches she needs then divide it by 36 to figure out how many yards she needs. I think we figured it out!! :woohoo:

5. I hated math in school.
But I love practical math now.
