The Government of the USA is not founded on Christianity
by Jim Walker

Many Religious Right activists have attempted to rewrite history by asserting that the United States government derived from Christian foundations, that our Founding Fathers originally aimed for a Christian nation. This idea simply does not hold to the historical evidence.

Of course many Americans did practice Christianity, but so also did many believe in deistic philosophy. Indeed, most of our influential Founding Fathers, although they respected the rights of other religionists, held to deism and Freemasonry beliefs rather than to Christianity.

1. Good website
I just bookmarked it for future use when arguing with RWers (not that they give a damn about reality).

2. True (the reality statement)
but pointing out to rw'ers their confusion between the beliefs of Pilgrims and those of our Founding Fathers may cause them to think twice (ouch!) about regurgitating the statement in the future.

3. "The Judeo-Christian ethic that this nation was founded upon"
How many times have we heard a fundamentalist Christian utter that statement?

4. They have to make that statement...
otherwise it doesn't fit their belief that the United States is God's chosen people.

6. An observation re: framers not basing gov't on religion.
Look at all the government buildings built back in the day and how many look like churches or have religious elements incorporated in them, or there being NO crosses or other religous symbols that appear on on government documents, currency, etc.

If ANYTHING, when one looks at the PRODUCTS of our early government, one can CLEARLY see that the framers *BENT OVER BACKWARDS* to AVOID religous association...
