4. It's a California thang...

or at least western. Manzanita is related to the madrone – one's a bush, one's a tree. Every year the very thin bark of the manzanita curls and drops off as the bush grows. The newly exposed skin is burnt sienna color and turns almost scarlet if it gets wet. Both the tree and the bush produce small roundish berries that contain several small hard seeds.
