Steam-punk Masquerade Ball
A few weeks back, I attended a steam-punk-themed masquerade ball, a fundraiser for cancer research. What is steam-punk you ask? Imagine a world where the internal combustion engine doesn't exist, or is a minor technology. Imagine steam-powered contraptions, clockwork robots, and space ships with solar sails. A world of intrepid explorers, adventurers, and inventors. The sky is the limit.

I didn't take many pictures and most of them didn't turn out because 1) I was too busy having fun and 2) my goggles had massive distortion that, with only my manual focus lens on hand, left me focusing more by feel than sight.

Here's a sample of the wonderful costumes:

Everyone went all out with their attention to detail:

Good music abounded thanks to a dj and the band, Corset:

I tried to take a picture of myself, but it didn't turn out. Did I mention the visual distortion? Oh well. Here's the mask/goggles and my mini top hat:

3. It was easy to make, if you want one
The mask was from a sewing/costume shop and I modded it with odds and ends (fabric, ribbons, grommets!). The lenses are from a pair of costume glasses, framed with shower curtain rings. Unfortunately I had to use a hot glue gun due to time constraints. I'd love to make a proper pair of goggles. The hat was bought at Le Chateau, of all places.
