Chain...Redux.

No matter how I try to spin it, getting the depth-of-field wrong keeps this shot looking like it is resting against the surface.

And I lose the effect, which I liked, of the rust stains on the wet concrete surface. :(

1. What settings have you used?

2. I'm still trying to learn the manual settings....
I usually shoot with automatic, or low-light settings; I think I may have done this one with it accidently set on the "portrait' setting.

I'm not exactly the brightest bulb in the box with these things...

It is finally getting through my thick skull that what makes a great photo are not necessarily shots of cool things, but as DS1 once said, cool shots of things.

Time to pay some serious attention to the online Digital Photography site, and start carrying a notepad.

Thankyou for responding Alfredo; I appreciate it. :hi:

3. The background could be the problem. It gives no sense of scale.
The texture of the chain is the interesting element. Can you crop and isolate a section of the chain to see what it does? Play with composition to see what comes.

5. Your depth of field here, IMHO, is pretty close to ideal.

I'd have to see some sort of comparison shot with the focus on the background to know for sure, but lacking that, I like what you have here.

(edited for speeeeeeeeeeeling...)

6. Along the chain
I don't know if it would help or not but have you tried a shot that's more looking down the chain? That way, chain itself could provide a bit of scale reference.
