1. What photo hosting site are you using?
These are really pretty, but my old eyes are really having trouble with the size.

2. Here's what happens with a contest
Once the winner of a monthly contest is determined, the winner hosts the next month's contest.

He/she starts by asking the forum participants for suggestions for a theme.
Then he makes a poll with the suggestions, and we vote, and the theme is determined.

After that we have a week plus to go shoot our pictures, and decide on our entry.

Then there is an approx. 3 day entry period, where 30 photos get submitted over a period of time. The time ends when the host has 30 submissions, or when the allotted time is over. There are contests with less than 30 photos.

Next the host divides the entries into three preliminary threads for the entire General Discussion group to vote on, voting lasts about 2 to 2 1/2 days.
(that is what has just happened in the autumn contest, and voting is about to close, or has already - which means there is no way your photos can still get in)

From the results the top 10 are determined, and the finals will get under way, which means voting on them for about 2 days again, and then the winners will be announced.
1 - 2 - and winner number 3.

The winner has to host the next month's contest and cannot enter a photo.
The second winner has to do nothing and can enter the next month's contest. I try to aim for number two. LOL>

====================

If you want, you can start reading in the forum and follow some of the above steps, which have already happened for the upcoming November contest.
We are at the stage of having decided the theme, and we are supposedly in the phase of shooting or finding our entry.
Entries will start at Nov. 15, so this is where you are lucky, you can read, and learn and get in on it, still.

We will help you make your photo the right size.
First things first. You now know the procedure, it's up to you to read the forum and prepare for the next contest. You have 5 days.

Welcome, your photos are beautiful, but we do need to make them bigger for next year's fall contest.

3. Welcome!
You are too late, but I suggest you use this thread to practice trying to make the pictures the right size. It looks like you are on Flickr. I use Photobucket. It is pretty easy there to get the length and width right (although sometimes the file size is too big, and you have to use other techniques). Try posting your pictures bigger here so you can be ready for another contest!

4. I agree with the others that these photos are very nice!...

just a bit small, as you noted. :)

Do you have a photo editing software on your computer? If not, there are some freeware ones out there, I think.
If you have photo editing software you can resize your images to about 800 in the largest dimension, and then upload to your storage site ( I use Imageshack 'cause it's free, but I think there are better ones out there).

With photo imaging software you can re-size photos to any size, but 800 in the longest dimension is usually the norm for posting in the photo group.

Hope this helps, and WELCOME to the best place on DU! :hi:

5. You seemed to have linked to the Thumbnail versions on your Flickr site,
Edited on Wed Nov-11-09 12:51 AM by ConsAreLiars
A good size is for general posts here is 800 or so pixels in the longest dimension. Find one that displays at that size and link to it instead of the thumbnail version.

Criteria for contest entries include being no more than 800 pixels in the longest dimension and under 200kB in file size. Ask for help if you have any questions about how to edit a photo to meet those requirement.

Edit to add: A good all-purpose free bit of photo handling/editind software for windows machines is Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ . Five stars in every rating for many years.
