Poll question: Help me pick my "Named After A Song" contest entry...
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 06:09 AM by regnaD kciN
Look Through Any Window

Twilight Time

Volcano

Eternal Flame

(By the way, there's a bit of an "in-joke" in one of the choices...see if you can spot it!)

Comments, obviously, are welcomed.

1. Tough to chose, I voted for the flame.
That photo really speaks to me -subject matter, and the execution with the gorgeous colors and stones. I also like the crop a lot.
Look through any window is a close second, the intricacies in the glass are incongruous with the word steel, it is an intriguing photo.
(I did not know how else to say that :))

I do not know any of the songs. I wish we had a link under the photo, so if we chose to we could hear it.

Maybe the host would consider allowing us to do that.

Really nice work Mr. regnaD - you were the one who named my "til they reached the sea of green" entry.
You obviously know a lot of songs.

2. if you do a YouTube search, you can find them
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 08:06 AM by Celebration
I don't remember Volcano, though. Eternal Flame and Look through Any Window I remember them well. Twilight Time, if it is the one I am thinking about, is a very old fashioned song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwajTekSAcM

Here is Eternal Flame.

I think it is a good idea to put the group-- Eternal Flame by the Bangles.

Eternal Flame and Look Through Any Window are the best songs for me! I can't speak for the rest of DU. And yes, being able to place the song gives the picture an edge, I think.

4. Yeah, that's great, thanks ! I think the best way to submit for this contest would be:
"Name of song", Performer
insert photo
U-tube link if available

=====================
In the case of one I'm thinking of submitting, the song's name is '
"Tequila makes her clothes fall off"
Other than wondering about the photo, wouldn't you like to be able to hear the song?

And unless the link is right there, you're not likely to search out the songs.

:)

5. Not fair!
You'll win for the title alone. :silly:

11. I don't think that's a very good idea, because...
...the whole point of the contest, as I understand it, is that the picture has to be "named after a song," but not necessarily have any connection to the song itself. Putting a link to a performance, or even mentioning the performer, means the photo will be judged in the context of how well it sums up the song, which isn't what I think we're after.

13. other reasons
It is so easy for people to do a Youtube search if they want. When I respond to the photo threads, I might give a YouTube link and just tell people they can learn new songs by doing a search. It should be made clear that only the titles of the songs are representative of the photos in the OP. Posting Youtube links also make it a bit harder to host. I have to say that sometimes I like screwing around and wasting time on the internet, but I can't really see myself going to that much trouble to click on a link to listen to the song. I'll do it here, because I am interested in what people post. But the average voter? No way.

Having said that, it would be much more difficult to get my vote if I hadn't heard of the song. That is what makes this so tricky and fun. We've all heard of different songs.

Still, here, I will probably listen to the links. I'm going to Volcano right now. Honestly, since I had heard of three of the four songs, and I liked the photos of them, I just automatically kind of eliminated Volcano from the voting process, for the sole and unfair reason that I had not heard of the song. Since Twilight Time isn't a favorite of mine, I kind of unfairly downgrade the photo. The title seemed too obvious to me. I love the photo however. I'm enough of a literal thinker to go "Huh?" That flame doesn't look eternal to me! That was pretty much my thought process.

15. OK - I'll have to wait to understand this a little better. I was thinking it's
more connected than that, more of a package deal. To whoever does not know the song then, the "song" is not any more than a "title".
Thanks for straightening out my perception.

12. The other songs...
I don't remember Volcano, though. Eternal Flame and Look through Any Window I remember them well. Twilight Time, if it is the one I am thinking about, is a very old fashioned song.

It is -- by the Platters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpdaga8cCxU)

For Volcano, you can go with one of two songs: Jimmy Buffett (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxuaUaS4rU0) or The Presidents of the United States of America (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF7Kk-VkfZM) -- the latter clip, by the way, featuring former Governor of Washington (and current U.S. Commerce Secretary) Gary Locke on backing vocals.

14. Jimmy Buffett is GREAT!
So I listened to that one. I remember Twilight Time and don't care about hearing it.

Along those lines there are some great songs, like "Smoke Gets in your Eyes." Anyone with a good campfire picture could use that one. I also like "Stormy Weather".

3. I voted for Look Through Any Window
These are all great choices. Well, I am not sure about Volcano, though I like the picture. But Look Through Any Window is the coolest looking one. Hey!! It has a staircase too. How old is that building? Is the whole style of it retroish? The picture makes me want to go up the stairs.

not found.
Give me a clue:
Do we have to know the songs?

superconnected (who rarely posts in the Photo Group any more) and I did a series at Everett Station four years ago. I think it's in my journal, if you go back far enough.

16. So I'm a dork
Once I started looking at the pictures and reading the titles for each picture and totally didn't bring these together as the song-title submition thing. Yes, I know it's the main title of this thread. But once into the pictures, I just saw really wonderful pictures and the titles didn't occur to me as titles of songs. So with that, I voted for the first picture. As I've mentioned before, I get drawn to symmetry and patterns. The gentle hues within the little square panels of glass are delicate and "sing to me". I was also drawn by the stark volcano pic.

17. If you are a dork
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 06:48 PM by Celebration
You are a dork that takes great photos when you walk your dog. :)

I like the first photo the best too, even not considering the titles. But we are in the minority. The eternal flame, to me, looks a bit like those things that you put under food to keep it warm. They go out in, oh, like five minutes. (I'm not sure that was it, but it reminded me of it) The photo looks great of course, but I was not "getting" the eternal part of it. Maybe the flame at JFK grave would qualify......... Naturally my analysis means that the photo will be submitted and win the contest.

18. I wonder if the "joke" - which still has not been detected or revealed - has to do
with the flame.
I studied it and would not be surprised if that is staged, or in other ways not quite kosher.
It was my choice for the reasons I said, but the windows call me back more, and I might change my vote if I could.

Time's up for Mr.regnaD to reveal the secret.

20. O.K., here it is...
Edited on Sat Nov-07-09 06:13 AM by regnaD kciN
The title with the "in-joke" is Twilight Time.

Not only is the photo, obviously, taken at twilight, but the location is First Beach on the Olympic Peninsula -- the setting for a key scene in...

As for the flame, it's at Flaming Geyser State Park, southeast of Seattle.

21. Thanks!!
"The park's namesake, the Flaming Geyser, and its smaller companion, the Bubbling Geyser, are both unique and intriguing features. While only burning 6 to 10 inches (250 mm) high now, in its younger days the Flaming Geyser burned several feet high with higher gushes of fire and water. It was even featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not"."

And to think I didn't believe it! I have to say that is still rather puny for an eternal flame. Now had you caught it in its early days...............And, add some rain to it and you have "Fire and Rain"

22. It IS a very small flame...
...and I know for a fact that it isn't "eternal." (I visited in early spring, just after that area had been flooded by the Green River, and the flame was out. I assume they sent one of the Rangers out with a Bic lighter to re-light it once things had dried out. ;-) ) What I really liked about it this visit was that the stone pit where the geyser is found, normally rather non-descript, was filled with fallen leaves mirroring the color of the flame. I actually submitted this for the autumn seasonal contest before realizing that I'd also selected it as one of the choices for November, so I switched the seasonal entry. If I don't pick this one for the song contest, I'll probably use it for next autumn -- although I admit I'm not thrilled with the way that the reduction from ProPhotoRGB to sRGB kills the bright reds in the image.

23. Glad to know
I'm not the only one thinking in terms of next year's autumn contest! :silly:

It is a beautiful photo. I was way too hung up on the "eternal" part of it. But, I am who I am.

I still vote for the windows, though. I keep thinking about climbing up the stairs, and looking through a different window every few steps.

24. Thanks for clearing it up. I'm glad to know about the flame, too. I was suspectin
but too timid to suggest it, that it might not be a real flame.
I went to take a look at Twilight, remembering that I had noticed it in bookstores along with others by the author, and was going to get it from Audible to listen to it on my headset while raking leaves.

Then it happened to be about a Vampire.
I was fresh out of wanting to read about sucking blood.

Will be looking forward to see which one you chose to submit.
Enjoyed the suspense.
