Here's Bill, On His 10th Drink Before His AA Meeting

Bill was roaming around the Phish parking lot scene, drinking every bit of alcohol that he could find. He would pick up half empty beers, he was unapologetic in asking if he could have whatever someone was drinking. He told me he had to go to his AA meeting. I asked, "How many beers do you drink before your meeting?" Bill said, "About ten" and smiled. I asked, "What do you talk about in your meeting, then?" He said, "How good it feels to be sober." Smiling again.

We were watching the police search a car. He told me the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department had broken his arm last time he was arrested. He said they paid to have it put in a cast and gave him $50, so he didn't really care. He then got curious about whether he had a warrant out for his arrest. He decided to find out. He went up to the cop, handed him his ID and asked the cop to do a warrant check on him. The cop started laughing and radioed his name in. Bill said he didn't care if they took him in, he just wanted to know his status.

I'm actually speechless, at the shot you got, complete with dead soldiers on the ground and his vacuous stare, after extracting a story worth telling.
I looked around on our quick drive through of the downtown Asheville Phish happening and knew you and your camera were in there somewhere.

2. I have NO idea how I am going to choose.

I started thinking about it, and I have literally dozens of stranger portraits. This is going to end up being a hard decision for me.

although I think I'm going to HAVE to go with one of those guys at Venice Beach. We just have nothing to compare to that here.
