If the light is from the top, try standing slightly to the side.
If you are allowed to use a tripod (not likely in a museum), a polarizing filter will remove much (if not all) of the reflection at the cost of low shutter speeds.
The problem with standing to the side is that the picture won't be squared off. It's a pretty low lite area inside of a state capitol building, actually. The only place worst than that for lighting that I can think of is a church.
