They're everywhere...

She's probably a little peeved that the City, or maybe the electric utility, trimmed up all this great brush at the end of our street.

1. Ya know, we have those here everywhere too.
But the crazy iceheads here refer to them as "raccoons".

Great photo.

2. Thanks, Jeff
You know, I don't think we have raccoons here. Wolverines, though. Those are MEAN raccoons. :)

3. Yikes! My biggest neighborhood fear is Mr. Skunk.
He's newly abroad in the yards here, and when I let the dogs out after midnight, I stand at the back door waiting for growling and barking, a yelp, the prospect of spending weeks with a dog who smells like burned tires, baths with soda water and perfumed doggy shampoo notwithstanding, and the forbearance or mania to be willing to sleep with this vast furry bouquet at one's feet. Mm-mm.

Wolverines don't scare me. You should meet my ex.:scared:

Seriously, though, there are a bunch of coyotes out on the Spit not far south of us on the lake. They've been spotted in a few neighborhoods upland, but not here yet. Better the canine clobberin' team encounter a skunk than a coyote, for everyone's sake.

4. No skunks in Alaska either
Edited on Sat May-03-08 01:06 AM by Blue_In_AK
but that's an odor I remember well from my childhood. x( We do have coyotes, though, and wolves, of course, which seem to be a bigger threat to the dogs. And I just read in the paper the other day that the Fish & Game guys are now saying that there are about three dozen grizzly bears living here in the Anchorage Bowl. Now, THAT'S something I don't want to run into. :scared:

5. I saw an article online the other day about the grizzly influx.
That's pretty sobering info. It reminds me somehow of the young guy who held me up at gunpoint at an ATM years ago. I gave him the money I had, watched his trigger finger carefully, felt some sort of sympathy and admiration for him after he took off, and have been thankful ever since that I didn't get killed.

6. Yes -- at their mercy.

:scared: I've seen signs of grizzly bears when I've been out hiking but I've never come face to face with one. I did have that experience with two black bears in Colorado once -- during a rain shower, we all ended up seeking shelter under the same rock ledge. THAT was an "edgy" half or so, but if they had been grizzlies, I would have been scared shitless.

7. Now that certainly is a different kind of pest.
I'd be peeved too if my good eatin' were removed. :)
