It's all over my head...
So, I'm at the local library (where I can get wireless broadband access ;-) ), and I can't keep from staring at the design of the sloped ceiling. Since I've been in an "architecutral details" mode lately, I wind up running the risk of people assuming that I'm taking pictures either a) for terrorist purposes, or b) spying on the other patrons (yes, I was asked about it!), and get a few shots. Hope you like them!

1. That is a library? Wow. What does the outside look like?
Public libraries are not known for their daring architectural details, at least not in my experience.
Oh, yeah, maybe a fountain or something, but strictly fluorescent lighting for the reading areas.
Cool.

Interesting pics.

They look like something a guy would enjoy - wood, lighting and ventaliation?

I've been in that library and I do remember it's designed to complement the outdoors.

3. Whoa! Would love to see more pics...
that place looks very cool :)

Rare to see a library be that architecturally interesting, most are just boring blocks, unless they're old. :)

4. "not my thing" but after looking at them a bit I began to see what you sho
You have a good eye for patterns, and the clarity of the images is great. I've never been in it, but you give a good sense of the style of the architecture.

The brightness of the windows is a challenge, but "fixable" if you wanted to polish them up. #2 is shot at a small aperture so the light beam is sharper than the background - an even smaller aperture might be interesting, as it would blur out the woode beams even more.

5. Me likes. Everyone of them
Nature is soooo 70's.
:sarcasm:

"Man" can produce some interesting visuals.

regnaD kciN can I ask you a question? Are you using Windows XP? Your contest entry was a bitmap image and these are as well. Someone on dialup would have to wait a loooonnnngggg time for this thread to load.

If you saved these from one part of the web to another using XP/IE you may be experiencing a common "problem". It restricts "saving" images to only bitmaps. The "fix" is easy. Go to your Control Panel, click on Internet Options, and click on Delete Files.

Of course... you may not be using XP and you may just prefer bitmap images. Just thought I'd give ya' this little "tip"....

Thanks for sharing these.

7. The "filenames" are all jpg, but......
Edited on Wed May-25-05 02:48 PM by F.Gordon
Right click, save em', and take a peek. They are all bitmap files. Each around 900K in size. HUGE for dialup.

Yet another EDIT....

8. Something's strange. I get 93.2KB for the first image (DSCN0845.jpg).
Edited on Wed May-25-05 03:11 PM by TahitiNut
I saved it and that's what I get on my Win98 Desktop.

93.3KB (95,501bytes) 98,304 bytes Allocated/FAT32

9. Maybe I'm the ONE with the problem
Strange indeed. I just did a bunch of "random" saves of pix on other threads. No probs. I also had a problem with a few of Placebo's png files for the contest page. When I tried to convert them to jpg I got a "bad png file" message.

Any computer geeks out there that might explain what the heck is going on? I'm using XP SP2.

Gee... thought I had it all figured out.
:dunce:

11. Irfanview
gives two sizes for each file, the file size of the compressed jpg on disk, and the memory usage of the file when opened - about 12X larger for these files. Whatever you are using may be giving you the latter. If you are looking at the filesize and seeing the larger number you must have somehow inadvertantly converted it to .bmp or such when saving.

12. You are using IE, right?
Edited on Wed May-25-05 11:35 PM by CornField
If your temporary internet cache is full, IE will try to save all images as a .bmp -- you'll need to clear those and then try right clicking and the "save image as" option.

If that doesn't do the trick, you'll need to uncheck the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" options in IE's security.

If the "save image as" produces a box with no extension options, just save it as whatever you know it to be.

Edited to add link to MS pages about it: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=260650

BTW, my personal work-around for this is to pick "email image" -- then I send it to myself. Be sure to check the "original size" option and it comes through without a hitch.

10. Not sure what's happening, but...
...in my FTP directory (to which this thread links), they're all .jpg (saved using Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature), ranging from 69K to 110K.

It's only happening with your photographs. It thought it was you but it obviously is something on my end. I'll play with it, use the suggestions given above (BTW...Thanks!)

give Firefox a try. It's like Alice's Restaurant. http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/central.html
In addition to being open source, it has extensions that can make it do exactly whatever you can imagine wanting.

(edit because I can't type)

15. Thanks. I have a computer geek friend coming over soon
I'll talk to him about that. I think I might be stuck with IE because of certain programs I use, but I'll ask him.
