For the "inland people" -- breaking waves

Do any of you other coastal people have some?

2. I got some
These are on South Beach on a windy day. We don't get Hawaii-size waves out here, but they're good enough to surf.

I like your wave pictures, especially the one with the wave crashing against the rock.

3. Cool ... I guessed you'd have some surfers

There were some guys trying to surf on those waves at Venice Beach too (above), but as my husband, a former surfer noted, "they couldn't catch a cold." Obviously rookies. You can see them kind of floating around in the distance. The top picture was further north on the California coast.

5. That's an awesome shot
What kind of camera were you using? It looks like the camera would have gotten wet.

6. Thanks, I made the image with
a Nikon 8008 and 80-200/2.8 lens, almost certainly with a polarizer. And it has gotten wet on many occasions. Shorted out something at one time but it recovered. Parked the tripod and myself against the back of a large rock that the waves were breaking over and waited for a proper splash to refract the sunset light.

8. "N.P." = "National Park"
Olympic NP is in WA state and includes a fair stretch of the Pacific coastline on the Olympic Peninsula plus most of Olympic Mountains. A wonderfully diverse variety of (relatively) undisturbed ecosystems with many treats for the nature photographer.

9. Oh, of course .... duh!
I was actually there a couple years ago. We traveled all the way from Santa Barbara to Seattle along the coastline, including that corner of Washington. I guess I was thinking "Northern Province" or something.

11. Thanks. I've been trying out my image processing software on it -
trying figure out what techniques do what. The only useful thing I've accomplished so far is less sharpening during size reduction, reducing it to 1/8 original size instead of 1/10th, so 64 pixels get averaged into 1 instead of 100, and putting a soft border around it. I think it is an improvement:

13. Well, the frame was a bit clunky.
Maybe I'll have to a fancy one like the pros use.

Here's the link to the photo.net image that seems to be well regarded by some folks there: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3382398&size=lg

20. Thanks
since I started taking b/w pictures I wanted to take pics of waves. I love the ocean, just don't have much opportunity to get to one :)

(I almost entered this one in the May contest, but decided it was mostly light and not enough shadows.)

21. (oooh) I like that one.
The glowering clouds on the horizon (far shore?) are awesome. The angle of the light reminds me of "Victory at Sea."

22. Thanks.
I'd been looking off one side of the boat for whales, and turned around to catch a glimpse of that amazing scene. Got a couple of whales, but nothing as nice as horizon.
