1. Since Regnadkcid took me on this excursion
I'm hoping to see some of his pics here.

Also, I'm already aware that some are too whited out from clouds. Unfortunaltely the mountians in some of these pics are totally white so unseen. I think it's 1. I'm using a cheap digital camera, and 2. the clouds. It was also a very dreary day and near dusk.

2. O.K....
Yes, the weather was pretty mediocre that day -- given my Olympic beach experiences, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm a fog magnet or something. ;-)

(All shots: Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D, 18-70mm "kit" lens)

1/100, f/8, 50mm

1/60, f/8, 30mm

The green on the slope across the valley was quite amazing. superconnected gave you the "big picture" in her post, here are a couple of detail shots.

1/40, f/16, 40mm

1/60, f/11, 50mm

A couple of shots of a huckleberry bush that was about the only bright color in the vicinity.

1/30, f/18, 28mm

1/60, f/5.6, 70mm

Everywhere I've gone recently, I've noticed tourists (or, more likely, their kids) making stacks and patterns from rocks lying around. This "Japanese lantern" was one of the more imaginative, and went well with the surrounding environment.

1/8, f/22, 70mm

A last shot of the pond at twilight (aided by a little white balance tweaking).

1/30, f/11, 18mm

3. A couple more...
...plus a DU-only bonus shot!

The special bonus shot: (It's "DU-only" because this is such an extreme crop, it reduced my 6.1MP camera to something slightly less than 0.8MP. In other words, it is only useful for low-res web display.) This marked the fleeting moment where the fog and clouds parted just enough for the top of Mount Baker to be seen for the only time that day, viewed by myself and the three hikers visible to the left of the frame. I call it Glimpsing the Summit.

10. A minor correction...
In my "DU bonus shot" description, I wrote the following:

This marked the fleeting moment where the fog and clouds parted just enough for the top of Mount Baker to be seen for the only time that day

I've since come to realize that the mountain seen in the photo is not Mount Baker, but rather Mount Shuksan. From where I was standing, Mount Baker would have been behind my right shoulder.

:dunce:

It just goes to show how bad the weather was that day -- I couldn't tell which way was which!

4. The Pacific Northwest is a hiker/photographer's dream, imho.
Living in the Dry-Shitties (for 5 years) and driving frequently either to Seattle/Poulsbo/Bremerton via Snoqualomie or to Eugene via the Gorge, I was always struck by the almost primeval views. The Gorge is particularly impressive, imho, at various times of year. The coastal fog created a huge variety of scenic perspectives. Then there's the whitewater rafting experiences in Oregon - a particular love of mine - with scenes worthy of Field & Stream.

5. The "Dry-Shitties"...

(Fot those who aren't from around here, the reference is to the "Tri-Cities," a trio of very Republican towns in central Washington's high desert, grouped around the Hanford nuclear reservation.)

And I agree that Washington is a photographer's paradise...for about six months of the year. We're just about at the end of that time now on the west side of the mountains, and can "look forward" to half a year of gray, drizzly, relentlessly un-photogenic weather until spring. If your experience has given you any tips on good shooting locations for the dark half of the year, please let us know!

6. These are beautiful shots, you two...
Is that a Sasquatch footprint in the first one? You're lucky to still have the green. It's all over but the snow up here.

7. Ok... you can't hang with regnaD kciN anymore
:o

Very nice. We both have something in common... like doing ground pics. I keep a folder called "The Ground We Walk On". It's amazing what you can see at your feet when you take the time.

8. wow, oh wow!
You 2 should do a calendar! These are just gorgeous! For hikers (previous hikers) like me, this is a real treat...I can almost smell the air! Sweet!

Regnad - I'm adding a few more. Better late than never. I finally got in again.
