Photog experts: What does this mean?
I bought a Canon Powershot A75 from ebay. When I got it and turned it on aiming the camera at any light source, the image on the LCD looks like the light is melting. Do I have a wrong setting or is the camera a piece of crap.

Help me before I flush this thing down the toilet.

1. What do you mean "the light is melting"...?
Have you tried taking any photos, and looking at them on the computer?

2. That's not necessarily anything to worry about.
Snap a few pics and see how they look before you start
to worry.
I know the LCD screen on my Nikon 4500 has a few little
quirks that only appear on the LCD screen; they are NOT
actually in the photos. Flare and streaking from light sources,
you bet!

Just remember that that little LCD screen is not a $1500
monitor; it is not intended to display print-quality output.
It's just a tool designed to give you a rough idea of
what the camera is seeing at any given moment.
It's like any other tool- it takes time and EXPERIENCE
to get the most out of it.

If your actual photos are showing the same defects,
THEN you might have a problem.

Did you buy this new or used? I just Googled up a few reviews,
and it seems to be regarded as a decent camera for its price range.

4. Water damage...
I think it was in the National Geo. magazine on Digital Photography that one photog had a water damaged camera that made pictures like that and he kept it for funny effects photos.

5. Your camera is on this list
http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

Something about moisture getting in the camera.... or sumtim'....

You could look at getting it repaired but not knowing what you paid for the camera and not knowing what a repair would cost...... the toilet might be a cost effective remedy.:-(

6. That makes sense. The package it came in was flimsy
and the camera was wrapped in one piece of newspaper. So I guess it's totally damaged, ay?

7. My guess is YES.... it's damaged. Sensor is borfed
Have you tried contacting the seller? If it was sold "as is" you're probably screwed but if it was sold as "works great".. "good condition"... things like that ... I'd rip into the seller and get your money back.

Good luck
:hi:

8. It was sold in mint condition.
We are in negotiation with ebay and paypal. Seller refuses to return the money.

Sorry... old joke.

Seller sounds like a jerk. You might want to send the link I gave you to ebay and paypal. As the story goes there were a whole shitload of these bad sensors made... most by Sony. Something to do with the way they were sealed. I don't understand all that kinda' technical stuff. I seriously doubt the camera went from "mint condition" to "piece of crap" just during the time it was shipped unless the box got soaked by water or something.

Anyhooo... good luck. Doesn't ebay/paypal have a 'buyer protection' thing or something like that?

Edit... I can't type worth shit today. :eyes:

10. No, the seller was a girl. The camera is a Canon.
We're waiting to see what ebay and paypal determine after we sent them all the communication between us and the seller. I'm pissed because we're out $126.
