WoooHooo, It looks like I just might be getting . . .
a brand spanking new Nikon D200 tonight.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Between doing some side work, selling my D70, and some scrimping and saving, YAY!

1. Just the body?
yippee!

My advice would be to get the 18-200 with it. I got the 18-70, and am now in the loooong process of trying to get an 18-200. And then sell the 18-70.

2. Can't afford the 18-200 right now. I've got the 18-79 already.
I'm selling my D70 with a 70-300 to help fund the D200.

The 18-200 will have to wait until next year (January or February, maybe Nikon will have their act together and have units to ship by then).

5. I assume you mean the 18-70 lens.
That's the one you have. I thought maybe you were suddenly talking Olympus!!

(FYI, Olympus has several odd-sized lenses, like their new 17.5 - 45mm zoom).

Be sure and try out the 18-200 before you buy. I had one for a while but didn't keep it. The photos I made with it were good but not great. My lens was not really that sharp, but it was very contrasty, so it produced images that I thought of as "coarsely sharp", if that makes sense. Especially on the long end, I had to set to f9 before it was sharp enough. And I've seen magazine test results that confirm that. Now there are plenty of people who love theirs, so I think you can get a good one if you search for it. But there appears to be a good deal of sample variation in that lens. And perhaps that's why they continue to have supply problems.

Also, I tend to not like the slow lens + VR approach. I'd rather have fast lenses, which is why I have the 50/1.4 and the Sigma 30/1.4. I have the Tamron 17-50/2.8 for my lightweight everyday lens. And as soon as the Sigma 50-150/2.8 ships, and if the reviews are good, I'll have a fast lightweight tele-zoom to go with it. That will be my "walking around" pair.

7. No, I'm keeping my 18-70. I'm selling my 70-300 with the D70.

4. Welcome to the club.
:hi:
I love mine.
If possible, avoid "bargain" lenses. This camera requires quality glass to perform.

Good Website for Nikon:

There is a special forum for D200 owners:

Good Luck.
Awaiting pics!

8. I got it in my grubby little paws last night, but by the time I got home
I was too exhausted to really play with it too much. I only got about 45 minutes or so with it before I was ready to collapse, it had been a really long day. I'll report back after the weekend :)

9. Damn!
I just freaked because my Sigma flash wasn't working with the D200 . . . did a quick Google search and found out it's a firmware issue with the flash, so I'm going to have to send it in to Sigma to have it fixed.

Ah well, I guess I can live with using the internal flash for a week or two.
