Poll question: Okay, I'm feeling left out - would you vote in my poll?
I've always liked the look and feel of tundra, so I thought of that for texture and also a couple of other things here. Your opinions, please.

1.

2.

3.

4.

Texture on a grand scale. Can you see the two guys in the middle? One has on a red sweater.

5.

1. If you insist...

;-)

I went with number 4. Number 3 might be more of a "crowd-pleaser," but I like the contrast of the old and the new in the image I picked.

2. It wouldn't let me finishing voting the
first time around. So first wish they were bigger. Tundra 2 has some great texture but I think the size here is making it look too busy/noisy. Tundra 2 has the same problem. I'm thinking maybe photobucket resized them??? So this size would have to go with 4 but you have texture in all of them.

5. Tundra 1 and 2 were actually crops
from these two pictures because I wanted to get in closer to show all the stuff going on. Maybe I sharpened them a bit too much giving the "noisy" feel, but I can't get away from the busy-ness because there's just so much stuff there. Tundra is an amazing little ecosystem when you consider that the area where these photos were taken averages over 45 feet of snowfall every winter (the record was 75 feet in 1955) and only has about four months to get out from under all that.

These photos are untouched.

3. Okay, I'm the odd person out, here
I voted for number 2. Now that is texture. Number one was a close second.

6. I voted for the glacier.
But thnk you need to make it bigger when you submit it. The red coat gets really lost at this size! :)

7. I think I could do that...
Edited on Mon Aug-14-06 12:34 AM by Blue_In_AK
This is a crop from a bigger picture. I didn't even know these guys were there until I looked at my photo full size. There were about four people walking around out there, but I couldn't see any of them with my naked eye. Glaciers are huge. But, yes, I think I can expand this. I'll give it a shot.

On edit -- CAN YOU SEE ME NOW??

Dear Contest Host -- Is this too big? I could make it a little smaller, but it IS kind of cool to be able to see the guys out there.

16. Probably just a hair too tall
I can't get the entire picture on my standard monitor - haven't tried yet on my wide screen monitor (which is somewhat shorter). 600 pixels high fits on most monitors - yours is 671.

I do like it bigger - I'd shrink or crop just enough to make sure the lounge lizards can see it all.

17. Much better.
And though Ms. Toad has a point about it being a hair too big to fit entirely on my monitor, I'm not sure that's necessarily a drawback with this shot. Aren't glaciers supposed to be big? LOL. Really, it usually bugs me when a photo is too large for my sccreen, but in this case, it seems almost appropriate.

8. I voted for #1
Though a little oversharp, it has so much in it that I remember about tundra...and I know with tundra, there are so many species of plant and fungi in just one square inch, it's absolutely one of the most amazing and fascinating ecosystems.

10. 2 and 4 for me, for texture.
2 has enough light and shadow that I can perceive the various intermixed textures of rock, dirt, lichens, plants.

In #4, I can feel the dryness and brittleness of the leaf. I'd prefer to crop it closer to the leaf to leave out the unfocused darkness.

I like #1 for patterns and color, but I don't get a sense of the texture. I think it needs side lighting to get some shadows. Or maybe just overall a little darker and a little more color saturation.

#3 also is nice color and patterns, but I don't feel the texture.

Without your explanation, I can't tell if #5 is ice, snow, granite, or weird Yellowstone mineral formations--all very different textures. Texture is definitely there but I can't tell what texture it is from only the visual evidence. But a very cool picture that also has lots of possibilities for Photoshopping, either to bring out relatively natural light, shadow, and color or for doing relatively weird abstracts.

11. In the picture from which #5 was cropped
it's much more obvious that it's a glacier and not your other possibilities...

but then it's harder to notice the little people. <<sigh>>

12. And yet more texture
is showing, and more of a contrast between textures. I can understand you wanting the people to show, it does show scale, but they aren't that important when it comes to texture. But don't take my word for it, I wouldn't. lol

13. Well, maybe I'll use the full-sized version
and do a little more contrast just to sharpen it up some. Are we supposed to start posting these tomorrow?

14. That would work.
I love your glacier shots even if they are starting to cause a tinge of sadness. At the rate things are going I may never see one with my own eyes.

15. That's why I set up a "glaciers" gallery
on my web site. I'm going to take as many glacier pictures as I can as long as they're here to photograph.
