hey, can I get some opinions on this pic?
I was just fooling around with a cooking thread and this showed up. I think it's kinda interesting.

What the heck are you supposed to look for in a good photo anyway?

It's ok to be brutal, it's just a pic of my freaking dinner yanno?

thanks in advance you photogs you! :yourock:

1. I think it's an interesting still life.
I don't know what the rules are for good photos. But I like the lights and shadows of this one. It may or may not work better if the sink and stove were cropped out.

Wish I could be more helpful.

3. Ooh, I like the warmth of the lighting!

And your wicked cool pink countertops! It's a very inviting photo, the food presentation is appealing in clean surroundings. Then, too, the geometry of the shot is neat, all kinds of angles and shapes. I can see why you like this photo.

But--alas!--the stove is distracting. If it were my photo, I'd crop it, thus:

I might crop it down even more, to focus exclusively on the food. I tried it for ha-ha's, but felt that when cropped this closely, the lighting worked better when darkened, and I had to play with the coloring in Photoshot.

In the end, it lost the charm of your original shot. :)

4. I can see cropping out the stove for sure, but one of the things I like
about the pic is the stainless ladle and the "suggestion of a shape" of the glass utensil holder, so cropping it square is tough, but if you don't then the whole pic is shifted too far to the left

:banghead:

thanks!

5. Yes, I also really like the steel sink.
It mirrors the steel around the cutting board, a straight steel form to balance the curve of the board. Now you know the anguish we photographers feel trying to get that perfect shot!

8. since you're about the third person to ask, I found one on the web
http://www.mountainwoods.com/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID=83.htm

and that's about what I paid for it too. mine just didn't come pre oiled, so this one is a nicer unit

note to self, get some more cutting board oil.....

10. Try Getting More Level to the Counter Top
the light is nice but it's a little harsh and you lose detail on the onion. try this again in the autumn if you have foliage trees in your yard, the light may pick up some of their hue and soften up.

...the labels on food containers shouldn't be upside-down and backwards.

Actually, it's a nice photo. The only concern I'd have is that the highlight on the onion appears to be blown out. If I were shooting it professionally, I'd try to minimize that by lowering the exposure and compensating with fill-flash. And I'd probably crop a bit off the bottom of the photo -- while the pink countertop is nice, there's too much of the sink itself.

And why is that label upside-down and backwards, anyway?
