And the winner is...
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 11:18 PM by Blue_In_AK
Jeff King of Denali Park, Alaska. At 50 years of age, he is the oldest person to have won the Iditarod. This is his fourth first place finish (1993, 1996, 1998, 2006) and his 13th top 10 finish in 16 races. He finished in 9 Days, 11 Hours, 11 Minutes, 36 Seconds with 12 dogs.

2nd place - Doug Swingley, Lincoln, Montana
3rd place - Paul Gephardt, Kasilof, Alaska
4th place - DeeDee Jonrowe, Willow, Alaska

Nineteen teams have arrived in Nome so far.

1. Whew! You freaked me out
I thought I completely missed the contest.

Did you have a chance to meet the official Iditarod photog? He runs an Alaskan Stock Photo site that you should check into. Might be a good place to sell some of your photos.

Oh, and did you go up to Nome? That is.... after you flew back from New Mexico.

2. You know, I thought maybe people
would read my subject line and get confused, but it was too late to edit. Anyway -- no, we didn't make it to Nome. This was one of the pictures I took at the start. I got a shot of every team and musher knowing that somewhere in that batch of photos would be the winner. I'm really glad the home teams won this year. The last two years it's been Robert Sorlie from Norway.

3. Thanks for the update
How many teams were there, total. Did you already post that and my feeble mind missed it?

4. There were 84 teams total that started...

I'm not sure how many scratched along the way. It was apparently a pretty tough race in certain spots, with howling winds, -40 degree temperatures, and zero visibility. These mushers are definitely a tough bunch. Here's a link to the official Iditarod website if you want to read up ... with a good series of photographs (although I could have done as well, I think, with the pictures. Maybe I need to get somebody to sponsor me out on the trail next year. :) )
